Was mixed cloudy and sunny first thing today, walked down to the local nature reserve. There were a few short light showers, nothing too bad but around 10-10.15 the heavens opened and a thunderstorm started, really close! I dashed for the shelter of a low metal footbridge (along with a banded demoiselle that was perching on the metal structure just by where I crouched) but being under a metal bridge surrounded by tall trees didn't seem a brilliant idea so I legged it to the brick viaduct, soaked through to the skin and squelching in my shoes by the time I got there. Lightning was going off all around me really close and another guy sheltering at the viaduct was jumping at some of the lightning, which really was VERY close!
Lots of localised flooding in the town, some of the roads were kerb-deep in water and others had little rivers running across them. The river Chelmer looked a bit swollen too, unsurprising given how much rain fell. It was so heavy that my hat absorbed so much water that it was falling down over my eyes and I had to wring it out when waiting under the viaduct! Got the bus home and am drying off and warming up now with a hot drink - going to have a bath in a mo, get some warmth back in me - was pretty chilly walking in the wind in soaking clothes!
Still, I did manage to see a Blackcap and get some poor photos of it and saw lots of either small or essex skippers... need to check the photos and probably post some in the butterfly forum for some help with ID.
