Hi Brian, I did wonder about p.aurata . Sorry, no other photos that'll help. What should I have looked for? It looked far more purple that p.aurata which I've seen in my garden. But I know that doesn't necessarily mean it's purpuralis. Hmmmmm .... not sure now.

Look for yellow on the basal part of the hindwing. Both have the median yellow line you can see in your pic but only purpuralis has significant yellow at the base. This can be seen from the underside as well as from above.

The night before last was my best for some time with 118 moths of 48 species (some still to be IDed or confirmed).

Highlights were my second ever Concolorous, third Sandy Carpet for the garden (which failed to pose), 4 Elephant Hawks and this gorgeous violet Poplar Hawk.

I've noticed on page 8 of the May newsletter on Mike's site http://www.hantsmoths.org.uk/ there are some good photos illustrating the differences between these two.

Just in case anyone's interested!

Nice photos, Brian, Nerine and others.
Another short session last night but I had my first A sociella of the year.
I also had what I think was a tawny shears, though I've never had one before. It was about rustic sized. Any views?
Today I saw my first yellow shell of the season.
Ken

Hi Martin

I'm not very good at doing id's from photos but from your description your first moth looks like Endotricha flammealis, a pyralid. I should get a second opinion though!

Amazing catches and photos, fun to see! Not that much in the traps here, some nights with no moths at all due to cold and clear nights. The night between the 17th and 18th was rainy, and then there was almost 100 moths of 31 species. The most interesting one to mention here was a Lewes Wave. At another location I found hundreds of them flying by day, a couple of photos added. Also a photo of a Beautiful Golden-Y from the trap tonight.

Hi, Svein,
Nice photos. There's no shortage of moths here - my problem is finding the time to process them.
Last night I trapped till midnight and had c35 species.
New for year included:
  • swallow-tailed
  • common emerald
  • coronet
  • small dusty wave
  • double square-spot
  • Endotricha flammealis
  • Epiblema uddmanniana

What do you make of the small noctuid? It was noticeably smaller than an Oligia sp. I had, but I suspect that it is just another Oligia.

Lovely Lewes Wave, Sven, nice pics from you and Ken.

I used the actinic last night and caught 16 species. I find I catch about 3 or 4 times as many moths in the MV but it takes me ages to sort them out so when I'm extra busy the following day I run the actinic.

From last night 'new for the year' are:
Small Magpie
Clancy's Rustic (2)
Broken-barred Carpet
Privet Hawk-moth
Flame Carpet - new for my garden but no decent photo. I took one immediately in half light and tried for a better one later but it flew as soon as I opened the pot. Maybe there'll be another time.

Also, a rather pretty flammealis - probably from last night though I found it in our conservatory.
