June 2009 Moths (1 Viewer)

I've got two species on my garden list that are the only modern records for VC17 - I have mixed feelings about whether I want others to find them or not! On the one hand it's nice to have some unique records, on the other it suggests that they are on the verge of extinction and it would be nice to feel that the species lives on.

I was awake at 3.30 this morning about an hour earlier than normal. Checking the garden confirmed my suspicions about the local Blackbirds and Sparrows - the trap had 30+ moths sat on and around it whereas usually the only moths are those inside. I potted as many as I could but the birds were still hanging around while I was processing the catch later on.
So far, 60+ species but only 2 new for the year so far - Clay and Clouded Border.

I tried a pheremone lure this p.m. as I happened to notice that my vapourer had emerged. (I was surprised how quickly this happened... it only seems a few days ago that it pupated.)

With the warm summer weather we finally got here in Norway now, the butterfly activity improved a lot too. A few photos of some of the highlights from the last nights, or species that (hopefully) might be interesting for some of You to see:

Pale Shining Brown
Purple Cloud
Red-tipped Clearwing
Netted Pug
Silurian

You will be totally swamped with Large yellow underwings! to the point where your trap is filled to the brim with them!

Quite a reasonable session despite a strong breeze and not particulary warm,105 moths in 45 species and some NFY's as well.

Common emerald NFY
Lozotaenia forsterana NFY
Slender pug NFY
Fan foot NFY

NFY last night were Light Arches, Small Blood-vein and Marbled Beauty. Others included a very orange-rufous Coxscomb Prominent and 2 Privet Hawks - one rescued from a Blackbird and one rather less happy individual sticking out of the mouth of a frog :-(

Another good night for mothing here in Norway. The highlights this night came to a battery powered trap, equipped with UV cold cathode tubes, and placed deep into the spruce forest.

The pretty (and new for me) Thera serraria 1
Ashworth's Rustic 1

From my garden trap there was also a few good ones:

Welsh Wave 1 (NEW)
Marbled Coronet 1 (NFY)
Scarce Dagger 2 (NFY)

Went out to Thorndon Park wednesday night, just south of Brentwood with a new face, Graham. Abit cool and windy in parts of the woodland but we managed to find a secluded area.
Lots of Moths coming to 125mv and a few stragglers to my 40w Actinic.
Species wise we fell just short of 50 I believe, although there's still some confirmations to be sorted out, I've been told that on a calmer night in certain parts it will do in excess of 100 early summer and 150 species late summer.

Highlights of the night were Rosy Marbled, Clay Triple-lines, Lobster Moth, Brindled White-spot and Suspected including 5 what we think were Great Oak Beauties.

Here's the list of Macro's, micro's i'm still trawling through!

Peach Blossom
Buff Arches
Blotched Emerald
Common Emerald
Maiden's Blush
Clay Triple-lines
Least Carpet
Treble-brown Spot
Riband Wave
Broken-barred Carpet
Small Yellow Wave

Clouded Border
Brown Silver-line
Scorched Wing
Willow Beauty
Pale Oak Beauty
Great Oak Beauty???
Brindled White-spot
Engrailed
Common White Wave
Clouded Silver
Light Emerald
Barred Red
Lesser Swallow Prominent
Buff-tip
Lobster Moth
White Ermine
Heart & Dart
Flame
Large Yellow Underwing

Also in my Garden this morning following a warm still night, literally Moths all around the trap, lots still to sort out but highlights were a local Dingy Shears and a scarce for Essex Haworth's Pug, so pretty damn pleased.

Some nice catches coming from all of you :)

Two more additions to the garden list last night. A long-overdue Drinker and Ethmia dodecea, only the 10th VC record hot on the heals of my only other Ethmiid.

A few other photos: one of the incredibly tiny but rather nice Apple Leaf Miner and a couple more Hornet Moth shots. Found two this morning at a site which has loads of poplars riddled with exit holes. I've been checking here for years but this is the first time an adult has been recorded at the site and is a first for the tetrad.
