June Moths (1 Viewer)

Only 1 Hearts and darts in the trap this am! using the UV...will try the MV tonight, and hopefully improve the haul :(

At last, some moths. Over 30 in the trap for the last 2 days including 3 NFM's
middle barred minor
May highflier (Herts rarity)
light brocade.
This takes my year total for the garden to 71 and grand total since June 2011 to 263.
regards,
Jono

Not a bad night last night, with 75 macros of 45 species trapped in a MV trap in my garden. A Puss Moth resting on foliage next to the trap was probably the highlight - apparently a local scarcity.

I was surprised to find this in the trap this morning - a very late Early Grey.

Thirsty Shark - it seemed pleased to be released into the honeysuckle.

33 Heart and Darts in the trap. :eek!:

Another decent night for me, until the rain came down. I went for a dusk/dark walk at Blean Woods nr Canterbury with a net. I was really looking for Woodcock and Nightjar (only got the Woodcocks though). Whilst dusking I found:

Peacock
Brown Silver Line
Little Emerald

Then overnight in the garden trap I finally got a Privet Hawkmoth (see pic), and also:
Buff Ermine, Snout, Spectacle, Flame Shoulder and the usual fayre.

Well done, Andy, I wouldn't mind Privet Hawkmoth in my trap.

I did manage to see Adela croesella, a pretty little longhorn micro, at Titchfield Haven yesterday.

Very slow here with only Heart & Dart in any numbers.

One new species in the trap for me though, 247 Tinea trinotella. It is nice to get one like this with diagnostic markings.

Egrets, I've had a few

From last night:
Poplar Hawkmoth, Buff Ermine, Freyer's Pug, Mottled Rustic, Lots of Heart and Dart, a couple of Heart and Club, 5 Bright-line Brown-eye, Vine's Rustic, Green Pug, plenty of Common Swift and Ditula angustiorana (Red-barred Tortrix).

Andy M.

Ran the MV last night...13 H&D, 2 Buff ermine, Setaceous Hebrew, Brimstone and Shoulder-striped Wainscot, was hoping for more variety, but cloud dispersal stopped play, hoping cloud cover might just 'hang-on-in' tonight.

June highlights so far from the garden: (all new for me)
Scorched Wing
Figure of Eighty
Green-silved Lines
Freyer's Pug
Sallow Kitten
Nettle-tap
plus several micro's

Also yesterday got my first Grass Wave and Chimney Sweepers at Warton Crag, the latter being my 300th British moth species o:D

Hi all,

Just started to run a moth trap in Dartford. Be grateful if you can confirm the IDs of a couple of these please.

1 Rustic?
2 Double-striped Pug?
3 Small Ranunculus
4 Light Emerald (crappiest ever?)
5 Privet Hawkmoth ;)

Cheers,

Andy.

1. Dark form of Coronet
Others correct I think (except the last, which is a little girl ;))

Nice haul Andy. My kids love the Hawkmoths too! I find that a child's arm or head make much better backgrounds than a leaf or twig...! From two nights ago I had less quality than of recent efforts:
Coronet, Heart and Dart, Freyer's Pug, Snout, Green Pug, Vine's Rustic, Large Yellow Underwing and Minor agg.

over 80 moths of 25 species. the best being these lovely hawk moths.

yep - Double Striped Pug - haven't had one in my garden since 24 May 13

Last night Dartford: Varied Coronet, Lime Hawk Moth, White Point, Broken Bar Carpet

It seems to me that Moth-ing is in a position that birding was in 80's. The dawn of social media etc hasn't had the same impact on moth-ing as on birding. We don't have moth pagers or mothguides etc so the grapevine seems to be all we have! I would certainly be interested in decent moths around Kent and keen to get out beyond the garden! I am looking to buy a kit from ALS which means I can take my Skinner trap mobile, so if there's any interest from other Kent moth-ers, let me know and we could try a few specialist habitats or something once in a while. I know the Kent branch of the Butterfly Conservation do the odd field trip, but they haven't advertised any moth events yet for this year.

Cheers,

Andy M.
