Joe, as Graham says it is Loshpotts G P - as named by my goodself due to it being down Loshpotts Lane. It is difficult to watch but as Andy says the best place to view is from the road bridge, but also the bottom end is good to view from the road lower down as well. By the gate where the sign is, there is often a small scrape appears that drys out in the summer - good for waders. It is owned by the local farmer. The plan originally was to make it into a fishing lake, but this decision was reversed due to the danger with the pylons running through it. So, in the absence of anything else it was designated a bird reserve. I think this sign is used to keep people out more than anything else. Last year or may be the year before, there was a further planning application. I objected to the development on the basis of the breeding birds on site. However, it went through. It may not be too bad as the application was for it to be a fishing lake once again. There are pros and cons. Little Ringed Plover currently breeds. It will almost certainly be lost once it is a fishing lake. However, as the quality of the water isn't great at the moment, (A1 run-off), more introduced fish may make it more appealing to sawbills etc. It may also improve access for viewing. There is a stream runs through it, but the water quality I suspect is still poor. Having said all that I've had c.90 species at the site. Duck has included Gadwall, Shoveler, Teal, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Goosander, Wigeon, and he who should not be named. I've had c.5 Little Grebe at any one time plus Great Crested. Perhaps the best bird has been Little Egret. Waders have included Ringed and LR Plover, Redshank, c.18 Oystercatcher - breeds. I wanted at one stage to seek an Autumnwatch type grant to improve the place, but gave this up on the back of the planning application. It needs some vegetation. It also needs areas leaving bare for LRP. You could build a Sand Martin bank, islands - loads of potential. I'd love to be allowed to take it on as a reserve but I don't beleive the private owner has any appetite for this. To be honest I haven't been down for ages as viewing is so off-putting. I will have to nip down and see if we've a Ring-necked Duck or a diver wintering!
