Just for fun - how many rails have you seen? (1 Viewer)

Matt (and others), we (three birding companions and I) were within two feet of a Black Rail at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, near Great Bend, Kansas. I probably almost stepped on it! It was calling from a wet ditch grown up in rather high vegetation. It then moved away from us and continued calling. We never got even a glimpse! It was great to hear its very distinctive call though.

I've had one that wouldn't show itself at Quivira, too. The other black rail also heard only was here in PA.

1 White-spotted Flufftail
2 Yellow Rail
3 Black Rail (HO)
4 Clapper Rail
5 King Rail
6 Virginia Rail
7 Water Rail
8 Grey-necked Wood-Rail
9 Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail
10 White-breasted Waterhen
11 Black Crake
12 Sora
13 Ash-throated Crake
14 Blackish Rail
15 Purple Swamphen
16 Allen's Gallinule
17 Purple Gallinule
18 Common Moorhen
19 Dusky Moorhen
20 Lesser Moorhen
21 Red-knobbed Coot
22 Common Coot
23 American Coot
24 Caribbean Coot
25 White-winged Coot
26 Slate-colored Coot

Also heard corn crake a couple times, but couldn't find the little bugger.

Cannot compete with your total from across the pond Jeff.

Have corncrake over most people in my home county of Norfolk, England.

Had to travel for sora, baillon's and little crakes. The last two both in Kent where I cannot recall seeing water rail on my occasional visits: the traffic around London and down there being far worse than nearer home.
