ETYMOLOGY.-It is a pleasure to name this species in honor of our friend José Parodi Vargas, who provided us with a base for our expeditions at his Hacienda Luisiana and generously aided us in countless other ways.

The Eponym Dictionary of Birds claims:

José 'Pepe' Guillermo Parodi Vargas (b.1929 or 1930 – his parents lived in a very remote area and never knew the exact date – and d.2012) was a Peruvian landowner and a congressman during the first Belaunde government. Pepe and his father were pioneers who constructed a small airport on his property, which the government used to survey the area, and eventually raised money to construct a road from Ayacucho to their Hacienda Luisiana on the Río Apurímac. The Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) terrorist group attacked and destroyed most of the farm (1983). Parodi also liked to travel to unexplored areas of Peru such as the Cutivineri Falls. When he died he was running an agricultural property south of Lima.
