There are times when I don't get much sleep, so the trip can be a bit of a chore then, but we stop at least once, usually at the One-stop in Belfast which is half way, and have a mega-coffee in the Wimpy to get the caffeine levels up! On our first trip tiredness wasn't a problem as everything was so new. On the car front Andrew is right, there is no need for a 4-wheel drive unless you are going right in the middle of the rainy season (Dec-Feb). Earliest we have been is Feb, and latest is Nov. We tend to hire a Toyota Avanza. They are higher than a normal saloon car, though not quite as high as a 4x4, and are quite roomy. Room is important when you could be spending 12 hours a day in the car touring the park. We have found the extra height useful for game-watching as well. The other advantage of the Avanza is that it is cheap to hire and economical to run. We have used Tony's Car Hire for a few years now, and had excellent service from them (tony@sacarhire.co.za). On the licence front a full UK driving licence is ok. For our first trip we got International licences, but they were never asked for, so don't bother with them. Take photocopies of your driving licences and passports with you. Note that for a lot of companies there is a minimum age of 25 for insurance. adding an extra driver is simple and usually costs about 100 Rand. The roads in SA are really good, and the N4, which is the road that runs most of the way to the Kruger is excellent and being improved each time we go. When you have finalised your details we can give you advice on the roads and facilities to use. Happy planning! Allan (9 weeks today :D )
