Interesting thread with some interesting responses. Back to the original questions. Most of my birding is in rural Sussex, sometimes alone and sometimes with husband or one or two friends. I like both. When alone in rural locations I never worry about who I'll meet as usually there is no one else there and if I do meet any other people it's generally other people out for country walks or a farmworker checking fencing or something like that but mostly no one. I'm more likely to fall in a ditch and break my leg than meet another person so I always carry my phone for that reason. At reserves I don't worry at all as they are all pretty safe places , at least around here but I am aware that some are on the edges of scary urban areas. I've felt much more threatened in urban environments than rural; there's really no comparison. There is one place I sometimes bird at dusk, a local heathland and popular beauty spot and that is really the only time and place I don't bird alone.
