I was amazed to see that my local Coot pair on the pond at Carleton Crematorium had hatched 2 young chicks today, with the female still sitting on at least 1 more egg which should hatch soon. This seems like a very early date for them to already have young, as the other pairs on my patch have yet to even lay eggs!

Jonny - I don't know if it's of interest but me & the missus visited the Crem last saturday(for much more sombre reasons than birding) & on the pond close to the main gates (which I'm guessing is your pond) there was a Cormorant fishing for a good 5 minutes, surfacing at one point with & swallowing a 4 or 5 inch Roach/Rudd - the Cormorant didn't seem too bothered by the many passers by either.

Probably the same bird was there again today, the first time I have seen one on the pond. It flew in at 16:05, fished for a bit and then flew off again at 16:23. Typically I had taken the memory card out of my camera to put some photos on the computer, and had forgotten to put it back in the camera! so I didn't get any shots

Schoolboy error Jonny :-O, which of course we've all done at some point. Fortunately the two cameras I'm currently using have dual memory card slots, so now I can always leave one in camera for such occasions.

I seem to be on a bad run at the moment, on friday i forgot my notebook and pen when I went to the patch, on saturday i thought i had put my binoculars in my bag when i went to cleveleys but apparently not, and then forgetting my memory card today :-O

Wait till you get to my age Jonny, you have to check the front door three times before you're convinced you've actually locked it.

Brockholes parking charges

Brockholes Nature Reserve LWT parking charges from 24th April: £1 for 1hr, £4 for 5hrs, £10 for the day.
Given that you can barely walk around the reserve in a hour then it will cost at least £4 for every visit. Make one visit a week and hand over more than £200 a year...copied from brockholes facebook page..this seems well steep to me if true!:eek!:

We had two Siskins in the garden this morning (Bispham, Blackpool), which is only the 2nd time we seen them visit, the 1st occasion was about 6 weeks ago. I got some dodgy snaps of one of them, which I'll spare you from.

I wonder if those that intend visiting on a regular basis can purchase a parking season ticket?

The car parking prices quoted above at Brockholes are correct and the LWT have "no plans to consider an annual permit at this stage."

Just been down to Brockholes while I can! They're filling the moat in. What a disaster area. More interested in the buildings and playground facilities than the wildlife. I feel like we've been conned by LWT.

Telescope Lens Cap found at Rossall Point this evening, in the same place where a birder had been set up earlier. No logos/markings on it so don't know what make. If it is anyones then please PM me.

2 Red Throated Divers were the only birds of note there this evening, 4 Swallows and 3 Wheatear the only migrants

Anyone any good on Redpolls??

We've had this one (see photos) visiting the garden (Bispham, Blackpool) for the last 2 days. My thinking is Lesser Redpoll, I'm basing that on a recent photo on the Fylde Bird club photos section that looks very similar, but I've not got the best eye for detail so quite happy to be corrected.

This is a garden 1st for us BTW, so whatever type it turns out to be - happy days :t:

(the 3rd shot was taken yesterday in the rain @ ISO1600, so please forgive the noise)

Cheers

Cliff

Wallend Road in Preston (Car Garages). 5 Willow Warblers and a Blackcap. The Willow Warblers seem keen to have their photos taken and have a fair few to add very soon.

Neil - nice one re. the Warblers, looking forward to seeing the photos.

Yes it is a Lesser Redpoll, lucky you :t: I've only ever had one im my garden before

Thanks for the confirmation Jonny - it visited for two days (Mon/Tues) but no sign of it since.

Getting plenty of Goldfinch & Greenfinch at the moment though, a couple of pics of the former are attached.
