Red Necked Grebe

Red Necked Grebe showing well tonight on number 1 pit at Brockholes Quarry.
It has been there all day but a visit tonight after a long day birding (see my blog) gave me a good view.

Other sightings tonight - 7 Sand Martin, 5 Heron, 25 Swift, Cormorant, 1 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Teal (male & female), 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Greylag, 2 Pheasant, 3 Curlew and 8 Whimbrel.

Not sure how long the Grebe will be there but if you check the Brockholes Quarry forum it should be posted there (my blog has a link)

Tried to see the Dotterel today and it didn't fair too well. Had the most fleeting of glimlpes of what was a probable Dotterel (dad agrees) but nothing concrete. It's jizz was certainly indicative of one. The rest must have buggered off and left him behind! ;)

Also just back from Scotland this wkend. The dippers look fantastic Pat!

Oh and so sorry but forgot to add that today while looking for the Dotterel we had a Whitethroat, Whinchat and Corn Bunting .... all in the same bush!!! Attatched a pic of the Whinchat (the only one to be obliging).

Nice whinchat Jaff! I've yet to see one :( Hope you enjoyed Scotland?

We went to MSW this evening and found that Cyril Gibbons was padlocked. Heard plenty on the walk but nothing much came close - the light through the trees was worth the visit though!

One of our youngsters - we watched his brother/sister being eating by a sparrowhawk in the willow tree in the front garden. Unfortunately the photos taken from the upstairs window were very green due to hand focussing through foliage.

They're usually seen floating around Martin Mere. But interesting to know they get around a bit. :t:

Sorry I've just realised it's Ruddy Duck you said and not Ruddy Shelduck which is what I was on about, little bit of misreading there. |^| Ruddy ducks will turn up pretty much anywhere although coincidentally they can be seen frequently at MM also!

I live in south shore and I regularly watch Marton mere , Stanley park, Mythop flood and myerscough quarry... My friend lives in preston and he watches avenham park and walks on the south side of the ribble near penwortham, I think any spot is worth a watch and a quick walk everyday will suprise you with some species... A little way into bowland however at the boar park on the banks of the hodder there is many a pied flycatcher and the same at barnacre reservoir/ nicky nook area, plenty of pied flycatcher and redstarts which is something different from the fylde!!! also Brockholes is very overlooked... had a red necked grebe only on sunday... but hopefully you knew that and had chance to catch up with it???

Hi there,

I'm trying to find out which Counties still use the Watsonian Vice County system to record birds in and which go by whatever the political boundary may change to (and why).

The Watsonian Vice County system was set to accurately record and compare historical and modern data and it seems that there can be/is confusion when some counties no longer use this system whilst others do. Does anyone in your county have a view on this ? Discussion here if anyone has a comment:

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=142074

ps this is not about getting more or less county ticks, more a question about uniformity in recording.

I can't help Johnny as I don't even understand the question, but hopefully someone will stop by & give you an answer.

Stanley Park yesterday, 1 x Blackcap (see photo), 2 x Great Spotted Woodpeckers (male & female), 2 x Great Crested Grebes.

Cheers

Got up to Warton Crag for a couple of hours yesterday. Both adult Peregrines were showing really well, with frequent flights around the crag and over the car park, much to the delight of all the birders there. I only saw two chicks in the nest, both feeding well, though I know that three were reported the day before - anyone else see all three? The most spectacular action was when one of the Peregrines arrived carrying a live female Mallard. The duck must have been heavier than the Peregrine, as she was having some difficulty with it, and eventually had to drop it onto a grassy ledge. Moments later she dropped down onto the unfortunate Mallard again, but in attempting to carry it off this time, the Mallard regained some strength, and managed to escape the talons, speeding away to the left of the crag - whether she survived, or simply crashed out of sight I cannot say. A few photos below; the ones of the Mallard debacle are poor, but better than nothing.
