Up at Preston Docks on most of my lunch breaks now with the ole camera. The terns I seem to have missed last week as not seen them for a while. But up at Lockside Road there is lots of juvenile Long Tailed Tits flitting around in the trees, see pic below
Just a couple of pics..!:t:

Finally got to Warton Crag today and those chicks are due to fledge any day soon. Female was circling around tempting them off the ledge to no success. Earlier they looked like they were just about to go then head back to the nest. Also nice to meet someone who actually spoke to me and let me use his tripod to get an even closer look. But god do I now need a 500mm lens!!!

Also can some people not read, just as I left some ****holes decided they would scale the gate that explained why they were closed and then walked up the crag to look for places they could of climbed... IDIOTS!!!

Went back up to Warton Crag this morning with the wife and was a good day to visit. Both the male and the female Peregrine on show, both chicks looking very healthy indeed. Male brought a kill in for the chicks to which just the one devoured in no time. Was good to chat to a few fellow birders aswell, who once again let me have a great view through their scopes.

Went home and decided that I would get out locally while the wife had a kip before doing a night shift. Ended up at Squires Gate near the Airport, back of Morrisons. Have to say this is turning into a small haven, shame they are throwing buildings up like noones business. Anyway saw 3 x Skylarks, masses of Rooks, Curlew and Oystercatcher flew over, 2 x Greenfinches and 10 x Linnets. After persuaing the Linnets for ages and giving up hope I eventually stumbled across one perched on a fence near all the buildings... finally got my pic!!!

a male Red Backed Shrike has been seen at Brockholes Quarry today. As I was watching Russel Howard at Preston Guild Hall I was unable to get down to see it. Hopefully it will still be around in the morning. For details of where it is check the Brockholes Quarry forum - link on my blog.

The Common Tern pair on Preston Docks seem to be doing very well, guessing chicks will be arriving soon but to be honest I think there in for a hard time with the amount of gulls around there.

Both ends of the dock are perfect viewing points for the male flying around and also diving for fish. Will post some pics I have taken over this week.

The Common Tern pair on Preston Docks

Might head down there myself one night, my son hasn't seen them yet.
Where's the best place to ge photo's from?

Brockholes last night.

Drake Wigeon, 2 Redshank, Ringed and Little Ringed Plover and a Curlew amongst the usual sightings down there.

If you know the docks well then this should be easy. Be on the opposite side to Morrisons and look for the concrete slabs that are on the dock about 8 of them, usually gulls and coots congregate on them. The fourth block out the female is always sat on and the male should be very close by.

If you dont see the male look around the dock for him flying about. If not there then continue over the swing bridge and walk up towards the houses on the side of the dock (after the swing bridge). He flies around there alot and if not there, walk over the mound to where the river ribble joins the estuary and he also fishes round there.

Awesome views of him skitting around in the air and also catching fish.

Cheers Neil, just checked it on google maps satellite view, looks easy to find.
Might even try and head up there tonight.

Just been on my lunch break Derek and got a corking pic of the male coming in over the female. They are taking it in turns incubating by the look of it.

Not sure if you've seen them but there are 2 pairs of common tern on the docks. We stood by the blocks by the appartments and there were a pair nesting about half way down then looked over to the other side (Morrisons) and there were 2 more on the blocks there.

Have some photos but I haven't had chance to look through them yet but I don't think any sound as good as yours.

Some great shots Neil much better than mine.
Now I know where they are might head up for a little longer over the weekend to get some better ones. All my flight shots were pretty much into the sun so didn't turn out to good.

wood sandpipers

A very rare sight especialy at this time of year, shame he didn't report them anywhere.

He was very much like myself a solitary birder...!He came across as genuine and was a delight to talk too.He had some serious kit as well, cannon 40 d,300 lens with 1x4 tc.A top opticron scope and bins.Although i do all my birding on my own,i do like the interactions with other birders you get from time to time,in general i find birders to be intelligent interesting sorts.......Was at newton marsh a few months ago and spotted a guy with a scope on the tip on the left looking down onto the marsh, i wondered what he was looking at and where,so when i got home i google earthed the marsh ...to find that there is a bloody big pond to the left of of the main pit that you cannot see from the road...lol all these years and i never even knew it was there......hehe Peace.!By the way the terns are fantastic to watch, flying acrobats..!
