Missed out on on the Peregrine due to 2 idiots walking across the mere!!

Also missed out on the Honey Buzzard spotted at Brockholes Wetland yesterday lunch time !!!!!

Derek

I was at Brockholes today, my first visit, and in the air above Red Scar was what I took to be a common buzzard. It had a lighter back, though. Also, it hung on the wind for a short while before swooping really quickly groundwards. Most of the time it just soared around. Bearing in mind that I'm fairly new to this and naive, could this have been a Honey buzzard ? Or is it just wishful thinking ?

Also saw a green woodpecker fly over and a kestrel.

probable male Red Breasted Flycatcher reported in Fulwood just northwest of the A6 Garstang Road/A5085 Blackpool Road junction on a wall in the garden of 16-18 Brackenbury Road.

Martyn,

Buzzard - fairly common resident in the area.

Honey Buzzard - very scarce passage migrant, I think all or virtually all records at Brockholes have been fly throughs.

Therefore Buzzard much, much more likely.

Regards,

Stephen.

Wishfull thinking I'm afraid, buzzard are often sighted in the area.

There is report of a red-breasted flycatcher just northwest of the A6 Garstang Road/A5085 Blackpool Road junction on a wall in the garden of 16-18Brackenbury Road. I'm heading up after my tea to see if it's still around.

What time is bird?
Ah well, I'm sure that it won't be the last time that I'm disappointed.

Thanx for the replies.

To be fair, you haven't said anything that rules out HB, and since one has been seen at Brockholes it is a possibility. But without more details it can only remain a possibility.

Hi,

Was reading about the red-breasted flycatcher on the Birding.uk.com forum, apparently there was a mistake with the address - it's on Lorraine Avenue, parallel to Brackenbury Rd.

Cheers,

Alan

Thats why there were no birders around and no sign of the bird!

Though we did have a scout around the area and didn't see anything.

Hi people, I'm new here. I have signed up due to the confusion about the red-breasted flycatcher. The bird was first seen in the back garden of 14 Brackenbury Rd and then moved down to No.18 so heading south. The back gardens of Brackenbury Rd can not be seen from the road at all however the eastern end of Moor Park is very close and would be a good bet for a search.

Thanks Nutter Hatch, shame the person who reported it on Birdguides didn't give a little more information!

Hope that poor bird is okay and not too harrassed by angry 'birders' who have lost their way and need a tick ?? LOL Not to mention the local residents.......

When I was there I didn’t see any angry birders or residents.

We didn’t go just to get a ‘tick’ we went to see a bird that is not resident of this country and would have been a delight to see, if it was still around. I only live 10 minutes from the reported sighting which is why I decided to take a look and I posted on here about the sighting because there are a couple of members from Preston who contribute here.

Sparrowhawk circling around Preston Docks this afternoon, all the swallows including the young mocking it. Was good to see as last night another Sparrowhawk was taking alot of abuse from a gull over the road from my house. Sparrowhawk minding his own business on neighbours TV aerial and this gull was dive bombing it.

While am on the subject of hawks, birds of prey etc etc. Where is the best place in Lancs to see numerous varities of birds of prey? I fancy a bird of prey hunt on Sunday

Hi Neil

I reckon Leighton Moss would give you the chance of a few raptor sightings, Marsh Harriers & Buzzards are both likely, with the chance of a Hobby (not sure when one was last seen but I don't think it was too long ago), plus up the road at Warton Crag you've got a chance of a Peregrine.

Onto more mundane sightings. I had 20 mins at Fleetwood Marsh Dog walking park yesterday - where I spotted 2+ Sedge Warblers (inc one juvenile), 2 (juvenile?) Little Grebes, 2 Grey Heron, 2 Reed Bunting, 6+ Pied Wagtails, 3 Swift & 2 Swallows.

I've attached a few handheld shots.

Cheers

Cliff

Blackpool airshow this aft' seemed to stir the birds up a bit. In addition to Woodpigeons, Collared Doves, Starlings & Sparrows charging off in all directions was a Sparrowhawk overhead (Bispham), heading in an easterly direction presumably to avoid all the commotion.

Not a very good photo, I'm thinking it's maybe a juvenile?

Cheers

Cliff
