Cliff - as Pitvar says it is the small lodge next to the McD's on the A59 near Clitheroe and is still there today. Great LEO shot, must have been the same one I saw earlier in the week, I could only find one also.

Called in quite a few places today -

Fleetwood off the shore - Oystercatcher and Redshank
Fleetwood boating lake - 3 Merganser, 1 Tufted Duck
Rossall - 100 Pinkfooted Geese, 1 Whooper Swan
Fairhaven Lake - Cormorant (don't think I saw the shag), female Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, Redshank, Shellduck, Curlew, Snipe, Little Grebe, Fieldfare,
Newton Marsh - 100+ Curlew, 10 Golden Plover, 40 Lapwing, Buzzard

Yesterday: 5 Bewick's with c40 whoopers on Lytham Moss.

Today: 9 Bewick's with 103 whoopers half a mile SE of Hesketh Out Marsh. Merlin flew across Shore Road as I drove south. Later 4 short-eared owls on the salt marsh at Marshside, look for them around the area of white grass adjacent to Crossens Marsh, though one was right up by the sandplant this evening. Also a couple of merlins, two sparrowhawks and a peregrine earlier.

Cheers

Could you pinpoint me to where the Bewicks are please?? Not too familiar with the area but wouldn't mind taking a look.

Cheers

Hi Phil,

Click on either of these below, these are the fields I saw them on:

Lytham

Hesketh Out Marsh

It's SW of the reserve rather than SE, as I suggested yesterday! The reserve is at the end of Dib Road off Shore Road. It's easy to miss, there's just a small wooden RSPB sign.

Hope this helps.

Just got back from watching the Ring-neck Duck at Preesall, and the Snow Geese at Aldcliffe. The duck was a really nice looking male. Unfortunately it was very dull and windy, so my camera had no chance of getting anything more than a record shot.

It wasn't much brighter when we saw the geese, but I quite like the attached photo I managed to get of the four of them assaulting a couple of Greylags. Also on the marsh today, Dark-bellied Brent, about 400 Greylags and three Barnacles. Exactly which of these birds are wild, I could not say!

Spent the day birding in Lancashire.Got the Velvet Scoter at Barrow Lodge then the Black-necked Grebe at Rishton then went to Marshside but managed to miss most of the goodies there.Went to Mere Sands next, car park full to bursting so had a drive round the local lanes and came across the sighting of the day,at least 70 Corn Buntings on the wires by Tootle House Farm on Mere Lane behind Mere Sands, never seen so many in one spot.

Went around Marshside myself today, via Ainsdale, which was incredibly busy with dog walkers, so no Snow Bunting for me, i heard from someone in the Sandgrounders hide that there were a lot of people on Birkdale beach with scopes and cameras, maybe the SBs moved somewhere quieter or was it the flock of Twite that was attracting them.
Brief glimpse of GWE before it flew out towards the high tide, my main aim was to get a half decent pic of the Shorties, and despite bitter winds and the chill factor to boot, i must admit to being pleased with the turnout, also had Kestrel, Little Egret, Pinkies and Godwit

reported on birdguides as being in a private garden that's all the information I have got at the moment, I wouldn't mind seeing it aswell, always a tricky bird to get. Ring necked Duck still present on Fleetwood Marine Lakes this evening showing very well.

Also managed a trip to Marshside yesterday but not before a few other places first.

Curlew lane nr Martin Mere - 5 Ringed-neck Parakeet, Buzzard, 10+ Cornbunting probably part of the flock you saw Frank as its at the back end of Mere Sands.

Martin Mere - just the usual, was hoping for some raptors and a Bewicks but couldn't spot one amongst the Whooper.

Hesketh out Marsh at hight tide - Redshank, Little Egret, Meadow Pipit, Whooper Swan 30+ (to far for me to pick out if there were any Bewicks). Also flushed a Short Eared Owl which if I'd been eagle eyed enough would have had some great shots as it was less than 10 foot away!!

Marshside - went looking for the reported Snow Goose but to no avail and didn't even see the Short Eared Owl. Stonechat and the usual Wigeon, Teal, and a few Shoveler as well as Pinkfooted.

Spent yesterday at Ainsdale, Birkdale and Marshside. At least 55 Twite at Birkdale, and I also heard what I'm fairly certain was Lapland Bunting, but it's a while since I last heard one so I won't be counting it.

Between Ainsdale and Birkdale there were good numbers of waders. A few hundred Sanderling, Grey Plover, Bar-tailed godwit and Knot as the tide approached.

The scenes at Marshside were awesome. The tide was 9.7m at 12 noon, and there were hundreds of Pintail and thousands of Teal and Wigeon flying around. Lots of Black-tailed Godwits and Redshank, hundreds of Pipits and Skylarks. Raptors included a Merlin and two Peregrines, scattering ducks in all directions. Two Short-eared Owls hunted the marsh at high tide, and by dusk there there were at least six in the air together.

There were also a couple of thousand Pink-feet and about six Barnacle Geese. Interesting thing about these Barnacles is, I assumed at first that they were part of the feral flock from Knowsley which usually contains the escaped Red-breasted Goose which visits Martin Mere. However, there was a Barnacle with a white head amongst them, and that is definately NOT part of the Knowsley flock. So where exactly they originate from I cannot say. I only saw this birds head and neck yesterday, so I don't know exactly what it looks like, but in the past I have seen leucistic wild Barnacles at Caerlaverock which had white heads, in fact they were almost completely white.

There were ten se owls over the salt marsh at Marshside late afternoon today, along with two merlins, a peregrine and a gorgeous male hen harrier.

Earlier, at dawn, the black redstart at Rossall School showed well along the sea wall and a merlin was sat on a post on Division Lane, Lytham Moss. A bittern gave amazing views in a ditch just north of the radar tower along North Houses Lane, again on Lytham Moss.

Digiscoped pics of bittern and distant se owl attached.

Cheers

Well done getting the SEO Gradders - it's good to know they're in the area. I keep checking out their old haunts including opposite Brook Farm (I was there on 31/12), but haven't had a sighting this winter yet - but having read your post I'll be back very soon for another look :t:.

Jonathan - excellent photo & sighting of the Bittern :t:.

I spent a couple of hours at Fleetwood marine/boating lakes yesterday where the Ring-necked duck posed quite obligingly when it finally woke up, other sightings included 1 x Whooper swan overhead, 3+ Goldeneye, 10+ Tufted Ducks, 3+ Red breasted Mergansers & 30+ Turnstones.

I've attached a few out of the dozens of photos I took.

Happy New Year all

Cliff

You get about a bit... some great sightings and pics. Top Gun. Bittern spot is 11 /10!

Cliff... again just dropped lucky, I think the shooting had pushed them a bit further west than normal haunts.

Thanks to ALL for tips/info and great posts.
Best Wishes to all for 2010.
Happy birding.

PS
I'm having real trouble uploading images on this site for some reason, very hit and miss... for every images = three attempts... end up giving up and getting the right file size is a nightmare.... hence lack of imagery! Second attempt now. Very obliging SEO, managed quite a few decent record shots (haven't the equipment... does me).
