A decent bit of birding today and I haven't even left the house! The usual mix of gardenbirds together with a Brambling making a brief appearence, as did a Fieldfare. Highlight though was the sight of two Pied Waggies having a battle royale on top of the garage roof, they were properly going at it hammer and tongs!

Also which is the container hide? As need to see the Bittern, be a lifer for me!!!

You know the container hide Neil - a big green metal thing on the opposite side of the mere to the caravan park ;). Model photography eh, you jammy sod, my missus wouldn't let me get away with photographing a model - & I wouldn't fancy taking photos of the missus |8(| .

I had half an hour at Fleetwood marine/boating lakes yesterday - sightings included 1 x Ring-necked duck, 2 x Goldeneye, 1 x Pochard, approx 20 Tufted Ducks & 30 plus Turnstone.

I've attached a few of the many photos I got.

Cheers

Cliff

Hahahaha, my missus realises that if it becomes something there maybe money in it. As for container hide... the large one near the entrance or the one further round surround by the reeds?

May head over there this weekend if anyone fancies meeting up?

My OH and I had 2 days in Blackpool (got back night before it snowed-phew!).
Never having been to Marton Mere we were really impressed. We saw
The 3 LE Owls
2 Bitterns
the RN Duck (by luck we went the day it arrived)
And a lot of very nice/helpful people.
If you were one of those people-thanks.

Your lucky David the majority of people I see over there are quite snooty.

Glad you enjoyed the Mere, havent been over for a while and hopefully going this weekend.

Maybe fortunate but first off we met a group of 'council'? people who seemed to be arranging a guided walk to see the RND.
Next we met 2 people with scopes set up for the owls and they offered for us to look thro' their scopes.
We then met a group who didn't want to know us (obviously not of their class:-O so we just ignored them and moved on)
Then in the hide adjacent to the caravan site-the moment we walked in a guy said "Hi, I've got the duck in my scope if you want to see it" ......very pleasant.
It costs nothing to be pleasant so why some birders are so snooty is beyond me.

I was at Marton Mere today and finally saw the long-eared owls. I also briefly saw a Cetti's Warbler. It was a good day on the Mere today.

Nice pics Cliff. I don't think it was generally known the RND was back at Fleetwood yesterday. It is at the Mere again today.

Stephen.

Stephen(Steve?) - I note from yours & Jonny's subsequent posts I'm off the hook for not flagging up the RND being at Fleetwood on 04/01 - but that set me thinking - what's the protocol for reporting such sightings?
Taking the RND as an example, it had been reported previously as being at Fleetwood marine lakes; when I visited the lakes on 04/01 there were also two birders there & to be honest reporting the sighting never even occured to me &, other than flagging it up on here when time allows, who would I report it to anyway?

(BTW - the Ring-necked Duck was there again today (07/01) along with about 20 Tufties & 4 x Goldeneye)

Other sigthings from today included (all from our garden Bispham, Blackpool) 2 x Long tailed Tits, 1 x Coal tit, 5 x Goldfinch, 1 x Redwing (a garden 1st), 1 x **Mistle Thrush(which chased off the Redwing, see photo of it swooping down),

Cheers

Cliff

**a quick edit - the Thrush was a Mistle Thrush not Song Thrush as i previously typed

This is a photo I managed to get last week-it was not very obliging:-C but as it was a 1st for me I forgave it.

Cetti's Warbler

The best image of the Cetti's that I managed. It's almost in focus, dam those reeds. I can't even blame the breeze as there wasn't one.

Martyn - very well done getting a photo of a Cetti's, a bird I've only ever had a fleeting glimpse of.

I'm hoping to nip to the Mere in the morning, what's access via the caravan park like this week?

I've amended my garden Thrush sighting in a previous post from Song to Mistle as I got a better look at it today, again it chased off a solitary Redwing.

Cheers

Cliff

Bamber Bridge Birder
what's the protocol for reporting such sightings?

Hi Cliff great photos as usual.
Re reporting sightings I usually text Rare Bird Alert (07624 800479) with anything that may be of interest. Its then up to them if they want to put it on the map, even if it has been reported earlier in the day it usualy gets updated so people know when and where things where last sighted.

Spent the day between Martin Mere and Marshside today.
Losts of Whooper Swan and Pinkfooted Geese at MM also a Little Egret flew over and 2 Water Rail at the Marsh Harrier Hide.

2 Merlin and 2 Short-eared Owl was the best I could do at Marshside.

All my sightings and photos on my blog tomorrow, been away in Ireland all week and theres a bottle of Red with my name on it.

Belated Happy New Year to all on the thread.

As I said I had missed the pager report, apologies.

Any chance of using your RND pics in the Fylde Bird Club newsletter, a PM will be fine.
