Lapwing query (1 Viewer)

I realise this may be a daft question but why do flocking lapwings fly about for so long before deciding where to land.
It was 2 hours before sundown and the flock were flying vigorously back and forth over a distance of about 1 mile for ages before they disappeared from my view.
Are they looking for a better site or just group bonding?
Any advice would be really great, thanks (y)

Sounds to me like something (either up in the air or down on the ground) or maybe just as likely, someone has disturbed the flock from their roost/feeding and hasn't moved on far enough for them to feel comfortable enough to settle again.

That is interesting and explains it really well, many thanks. I haven't seen them since so perhaps they were spooked away by people in the area.
