Larus gelastes (1 Viewer)

The name Larus gelastes has been proposed (and used!) for the Slender-billed Gull. As far as I understand it was proposed by Lichtenstein.

But at some stage it must have been considered invalid... I can't understand why. Any hints?

Lichtenstein does not appear to have published it.

This name was indeed first published by Thienemann in 1838 (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/43814161), who attributed it to "Licht.", and did not describe the bird. (He merely provided a range statement.)
The first description was published by Keyserling & Blasius 1840 (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/15245726 & https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/43814161), who attributed the name to "Lichtenstein Berol. Mus.", i.e., Lichtenstein in the Berlin Museum. This is later than the publication of Larus genei.
