I had Swaro EL 8.5x42 for a year. My frustrations are with the extending eyecups, they do not extend enough to accomodate the long eye relief. I replaced them with eyecups from 8x50 SLC which fit more or less OK but have less tension and don't always stay up in intermediate positions. They really need to add several click-stop positions, I understand this has been done in the new EL. I had no optical problems with the old Trinovid and it was built like a tank, the telescoping eyecups were very well built with no play like these ones from the SLC. I think I like 8x better than 8.5x but the problem was that the old Trinovid and the newer Leica still don't adjust enough past infinity to accomodate myopic users. Swaro on the other hand can work for you without glasses if you are myopic up to about -5.25 Diopters. It has enough focus past infinity overdrive for me but just barely, I think if I was even as much as another 1/4 diopters worse, Swaro wouldn't work for me and I would have to go Zeiss. I did drop my binos from the car roof at a reatively low speed, maybe 10mph they were in an aftermarket case and showed no signs of damage. So they are solidly made. I will start buying Leica when they fix the focus past infinity overdrive so I can use them without glasses. They said they could modify one for me, presumably if I got a new Ultravid. The only other issue with Swaro EL is that it's focus is too fast. Needs to slow down a little bit for precision. Maybe the old ones were better after all in this regard.
