Leporid ID in Brazil (1 Viewer)

Hello,

Is anyone able to tell me if this Leporid is a tapeti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis) or an european hare (Lepus europaeus)? Those are the only two species occurring in Brazil, the latter having been introduced. Photo taken in Eldorado, S Mato Grosso do Sul, CW Brazil.

Thanks for any help!

But the darker tail and location/time of day could lean to tapeti too, right?

No, the black uppertail is right for European Hare and they are active at night.

The grizzled dark back, sandy flanks and general proportions also say European Hare to me, though I admit to being completely ignorant of the native Brazilian species.

See below

After looking at the photo Mark mentioned, the ears on the OP's animal look rather short, more like the photo of Brazilian Rabbit / Hare, and the tail is rather long.

I've looked at the Brazilian Rabbit pix on flickr and the ears are a clincher for European Hare in the queried photo: longer, black-lined and tipped, and much more heavily furred than the Brazilian, whose ears are naked inside.

Still European Hare for me.
