No, Val, you're not colour blind, it was very much on the orange side of red...if that makes sense! Interesting what Brian has said about a 'sculpture in copper'...I once had a leaf in copper as a brooch and it was very much that shape....wish I knew what had happened to it....but it was about 45 years ago!

I sent a brooch like that to a pen pal once, Wendy, as a birthday present. It was easy to post it to South Africa. I haven't seen any for sale lately though.

A large toadstool I found on a trip to Minsmere this afternoon, looked rather like a Fly Agaric to my eyes but it didn't have much in the way of many white speckles on the top? ..maybe they all got washed away in the rain!!

That looks most unusual Matt. I hope someone can id it. It actually looks as though it might taste rather nice, but I suspect it wouldn't be such a good idea to try it! As you say, maybe a washed out Fly Agaric?

Thanks, I'm rather intrigued myself!!

Saw many other shrooms and fungi in the woods but sadly the light was too poor for worthwhile pics!!

Hi Matt,

I found a similiar toadstool to yours late August. This is the reply I had on the 'Fungi' ID board.

Not a conclusive ID as you will see. The toadstool looks as though it is glazed with Apricot jam doesn't it!o:D

Hope you had a brill day at Minsmere!:t:

The reply to your post re the fungi was interesting Pam. I didn't realise they were so difficult to ID.

I must say the one that Matt posted is suspiciously very like the tarts I buy in Morrisons for my Sunday tea!:eat:

I would imagine your bought tarts are a lot more tasty than Matts, Brian!8-P

Thanks for the link, Pam!!

As you say it's probably quite hard to be 100% sure, perhaps I should have taken a closer pic of it's underneath and stem!!

Had a great day at Minsmere thanks, despite the orrible weather!!

Brian

Pretty sure thats a Tawny Owl feather, I pick up quite a few each year!! I think I posted one very much like it on one of my previous posts on this thread!

Thanks Matt. I have checked it against your photo and it is almost identical. I'd forgotten that you had included Tawny Owl feathers.

More for 'feather freaks'.

Below are photos of the exact same feathers. They are the blue/green wing feathers of Mallard Ducks. I tried a number of times before I got the blue to show up. The flash wasn't helping.

Just out of interest, if you put a light behind a blue feather, the feather will appear brown. The blue colur is caused by refracted light from the structure of the feather and when the light is coming from behind what you see is the brown caused by the melanin pigmentation.

I'll try for some better photos of the Mallard feathers I think, when I have better lighting.

That is interesting information, Brian! :t: I will have to look for a few Mallard feathers and try it out for myself.

I had the same problem with my peacock feathers in post 103, Brian.
