I can't really call myself a birder, but I am a bird appreciator. I'm live in the Santa Cruz Mountain foothills, on a ridge surrounded by oaks and redwoods. I mostly get finches, towhees, thrushes, acorn woodpeckers, jays and several species of raptor.
I have been watching a lesser goldfinch on her nest for the past 3 weeks. She made a beautiful nest on a drainpipe bend near my deck door. She didn't show up all day today, so I took a peak. Her nest is completely empty--no poop, no shells, no feathers, NOTHING. She was on the nest every day until yesterday--the last few days she was even sitting higher in the nest, so I could see all of her. I was sure the babies were in there, but never saw or heard them. The nest is in pristine condition. Could she possible have imagined she had eggs to hatch? For over 3 weeks?
