IMG_3108.JPGI saw this guy at Sandy Point MD on the 5th. He was by himself, a group of buffleheads were there but ignoring him. He is a diver, so I am guessing by head shape, coloring, and area that he is a lesser scaup. What do you think?

Brightening the pic, the shape of the black on the tip of the bill fits Greater Scaup better - Lesser has only the 'nail' itself black, this has black spreading just a little either side. The smoothly rounded head is also good for Greater.

From the plumage, a 1st-winter drake moulting from juvenile (female-like) to adult.
