I presume there are probably a load of trip reports for Lesvos out there but I guess you can never have too many. So here is another take from a first timer on the island. Saturday 26th April: A very early start meant an unusually quiet trip on the M25 to Gatwick for a Thomas Cook flight to Mytilini. Dozed most of the flight away but managed to time briefly coming to for a spectacular panorama of the Alps from southern Germany & again as we crossed the Lesvos coast & flew over the village where I would be staying. Landed early to warmth & sunshine & quickly picked up the usual airport birds Feral Pigeon & House Sparrow plus numerous low flying House Martin. Collection of the hire car went smoothly & I headed south as an introduction & for a look around an area I was not likely to get to again in the week. On the road & whilst admiring the view from Cape Lena added Yellow-legged Gull, Hooded Crow, Blackbird, Starling, Goldfinch & Greenfinch. On the wires alongside the coastal approach road to Haramida Marsh were Collared & Turtle Doves plus Barn & Red-rumped Swallow & a heard only Cuckoo. The scrub & reeds had Chaffinch, Sardinian Warbler &, the first lifer of the trip, a singing Eastern Olivaceous Warbler. After a battle to get through & out of Mytilini, the drive across the island towards Kalloni gave my first sighting of the local black-crowned race of Jay (atricapillus). I couldn't resist stopping as soon as the Gulf of Kalloni was sighted & a spell on the old road bridge at Kalami Marsh plus the roadside areas of Kalloni Saltpans added: Little Grebe, Squacco Heron, Little Egret, Great White Egret, Shelduck, Ruddy Shelduck, Marsh Harrier, Moorhen, Black-winged Stilt, Ruff, Crested Lark, Eastern Orphean Warbler, Zitting Cisticola & Corn Bunting. A brief issue finding my hotel in Skalla Kallonis turned in to a major issue when it transpired that the booking agent (found via a hotel search engine) had taken my money but failed to inform the hotel of the booking! Luckily for me, & thanks to the generosity & help of the proprietress, a cancellation allowed me to have a room - at least until the penultimate day of the holiday. A good start & after a nice meal an earlyish night ready for an early start in the morning.
