Monday 28th April Arrived early at Achladeri Forest to look for my second main target bird but as I had not yet discovered the Lesvos Birding website & there were not yet any other birders on site I did not know where this years nest site was so contented myself with slowly checking out first the car park area & then heading up both tracks in turn through the pines. Mixed in amongst the tits, finches & other expected forest species in the car park were a Goldcrest and a Spotted Flycatcher around the building plus a White Wagtail on the track & another nice Masked Shrike perched on the wires with Woodlarks in song flight above the trees. Further up the slope I had better views than I had managed so far of a Jay & a Short-toed Treecreeper whilst at the top of the track a Tree Pipit plus circling Common Buzzard. On the way back downhill an unknown call & slight movement in the canopy alerted me to what turned out to be a constantly moving & difficult to track but nevertheless stunning little Kruper's Nuthatch which I watched on & off for some time. On the drive to Skala Polichnitou I had a Hoopoe fly across the road in front of me. Birding the Polichnitos Saltpans from the car gave reasonable views of Greater Flamingo, Avocet, Little Ringed & Kentish Plovers, Little Stint & Wood Sandpiper on the pans, Little Tern over, Stonechat on the roadside vegetation & a smart Little Bittern flushed from the 'ditch' by a tour group getting out of a minibus. On the way back I stopped at the Vouvaris River where I flushed a Common Sandpiper from the beach & Mesa where a scan of the pools added Common Tern. An evening walk up the track from the car park to Mirsinia looking for woodpeckers was unsuccessful.
