Saturday 3rd May Last day & just time for a quick early morning trip locally before packing up to get the hire car back. I decided on the Tsiknias River Mouth. To avoid repetition I have avoided mention of the more common & widespread species after the first sighting but as an indication of what can be seen for those that have never visited the island, less than an hours easy birding (0630-0730), involving an approximately 250m walk from the 'hut' on the raised river bank, through the scrubby field & to the beach & back, produced the following list: Shag, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Greater Flamingo, Marsh Harrier, Oystercatcher, Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Wood Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Yellow-legged Gull, Common Tern, Collared Dove, Cuckoo, Swift, Bee-eater, Crested Lark, Swallow, House Martin, Nightingale, Whinchat, Blackbird, Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Jay, Hooded Crow, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Black-headed Bunting & Corn Bunting. I should sat that I got all my information on sites to visit from Steve Dudley's excellent "A Birdwatching Guide to Lesvos". The Freytag & Berndt 1:50,000 map, though a bit on the large & unwieldy side, was more than accurate enough. A great week & only really missed out on Rufous Bush Robin, Olive Tree Warbler & Chukar.
