Reading your posting, Steve, makes me wonder if we were in the same place!! 1st-15th we were there (going to post a short report soon - honest!) and from spoonbill downwards we didn't see any of those birds except just one night heron at Makara ford was a goodie towards the end of the holiday (must mention the stupendous Alpine swifts there too - at ground level as they drank. Didn't see any crakes but we were never at the lake early and we were told that's the only time to see them. Didn't go to the Napi "side valley" - (sorry Steve, your book not to hand at the moment so can't remember the proper name) as we had been told the track had deteriorated and also Bob just recovering from an accident and couldn't tolerate shaking about. Hence the cross-country track from Sigri was missed too. Two birders who were staying at our hotel showed us a photo of the nightjar near Sigri. We hadn't heard this was about so maybe they just came upon it accidently? Did you know about it Mick? Feel a bit miffed that we'd been there but weren't looking out for it. It was good that there was still a number of UK birders in the hotel for the second week. Usually the only voices we heard at breakfast in other years then were Dutch/Belgian/German. It was stupid of me to get uptight about the drastic pruning of trees at Scops copse last year - the site doesn't seem to have lasting damage at all. Sandra
