I am off to Errogie a week tomorrow for a 2 week holiday. We are just a few miles from LG so will be visiting quite a few times I would imagine.

I have heard that Findhorn Valley is a good place for Golden Eagles and we are only 35 miles from the Moray Firth too. Does anyone have knowledge of the area and if you could you recommend any nice walks, places of interest and touristy type places please.

Any info appreciated

Thanks

John

John, you could try Loch Ruthvin and loch Insh both of which are Rspb reserves if you want to go a bit further afield venture onto the black isle for dolphins etc at chinnery point and while in the area a nice short walk is the Rspb reserve at Fairy Glen. Checking the map there looks to be some walks well into the Coignafearn area which could save you a drive down the findhorn valley. LG is actually over 40 miles from Errogie so it will probably take at least 1 hr to drive there double that if you see anything on the way

Here is a post of mine from the RSPB blog.

The gap between first hatch and first fledge at Loch Garten since 1991 seems to have varied between 50 and 57 days. It was 50 days with Henry as dad in 2006 and 57 days, you have guessed it with OVS in 2008.

We have had 51 days once, 52 days four times, 53 days twice, 54 days twice, 55 days once and 56 days once.

This year we reach 50 days on 11th July. So I will be very bold and predict that one of these chicks will fledge on 10 July at 49 days.

Hi Everybody,

Weather permitting the 3 chicks at LG will be ringed and satellite tagged on Monday the 6th July at 8.00 am. The cameras will be left on.

On the RSPB blog update the chicks have been named Rothes, Mallachie and Garten (all lochs in the area.)

Here's hoping and praying the weather is still good there and chick 3 is better behaved than it normally is, giving the others the evil eye and pushing them about so it is first in the food queue.

Morning Everyone,

As luck would have it the Loch Garten cameras went off line on Thursday night, it is a router problem and so far unfixed so we missed watching the ringing but the old stills camera is working but please refresh a lot to keep it as near up to date as possible.

The chicks were all ringed and 2 satellite tagged as well and no doubt all the information will be on the RSPB blog when they have time to write it.

I just looked at the picture now and they are all laid out like pancakes or I think plaice, take your pick.

Hi Everybody,

The web cam is now working but unfortunately without sound.

We have 3 sisters at Loch Garten and that probably explains why they are all feisty just like their mum.

Loch Garten and Roy Dennis are to be thanked for all their hard work today and both Richard and Roy got pooped on by the chicks they were ringing. The whole story with pictures of this morning can be seen on the LG Blog.

What a dad Odin is I noticed while the chicks were being ringed he made a half hearted attack. He obviously saw EJ sitting in a nearby tree watching, she after all has seen it before. At 15.49 the poor girl is trying to keep the chicks dry as it is oviously raiing. The chicks are doing a lot of wing flapping but do not seem bothered by their satellite tags you can see the aerials on their backs.

Been in Scotland for 3 days now and today is the first day of rain. On the drive up we saw a couple of Buzzards on the A9, one right above us and quite low.

Went to Loch Garten today but the weather was terrible, we had to shelter at Boat of Garten as there was a huge thunder storm, we tried to get some lunch at the Boat pub but the kitchen was flooded! The roads were like rivers it was incredible.

The Loch Garten centre was fantastic, it's our first visit and I could have stayed all day. I saw EJ with my very own eyes in a tree near the nest and it was quite emotional to be honest.

The birds have been ringed and the 2 oldest had their sat tags fitted. One of the staff told me that Odin attacked the man on the ladder as he was climbing up towards the nest, what a hero Odin is. He also told me of the time when there was an intruder in a tree near the nest who wouldn't go so Odin climbed high into the sky, closed his wings Perigrine fashion and flew straight at the intruder knocking it clean out of the tree.

We will be going back soon and will have more time to hang around this time. Going to Findhorn Valley later in the week so hopefully we will see a Goldie.

I was on holiday near Aviemore last week and had a wonderful time, visiting both Loch Garten and the fish farm at Rothiemurchus.

Although the fish farm's opening hours last week were 9-5, from 1 June it is 9am-9pm for fishermen and the public, I was told. I had no difficulty getting in. There is a small charge, but if you are going to visit more than once, you can buy a weekly "Rothiemurchus Explorer" card from the Visitor Centre for only £1.50 per person, and that gives you free entry to the fish farm and free parking at Loch an Eilein and other perks, which is very reasonable.

The £95 photography package is held from 5am-9.30am before the fishermen and public come in. They go in special hides which are locked during the day, and get advised by walkie talkie when there is an osprey approaching! The public hide is available during the day for anyone to go in.

They have also made a new fishing loch specifically for the osprey, where there will be no fishermen, keeping the ospreys away from the fishermen, and vice versa. It will be open during the day in the next week or so.

We plan to visit in a day or two, the Osprey experience is £125 per person now!

None of them have fledged yet - they are just very good at hiding over at one side of the nest where we can't see them - usually Rothes, I think!!
