Chicks shall be getting leg rings next week sometime. They look in fantastic condition and the Parents can be proud of themselves.Between the Loch Garten pair and the other neighbouring Ospreys in the Strath,Im surprised there are any fish left,in the area..!

Is the camera switched off whilst the young are retrieved for ringing?

(Just read the osprey blog where answer to above is given - should have done that first!)

Hi Folks,

Just to let you know the team at Loch Garten are hoping to ring and tag the chicks tomorrow Thursday the 8th July at 8.00 pm, yes that is right evening in the UK and the camera will remain on, hope you get good videos, screen grabs or whatever else they are called, so keep your fingers crossed the weather improves. Safety is of course the most important thing for whoever climbs the 60 ft. to the nest and our chicks.

The winds sound gale force to me coming over my speakers and the chicks are laid down together for shelter. They are scary when they do their wing flapping and that was before the winds got stronger this week. When the wind was bad yesterday once or twice it looked as if a chick was going to fly off whether it wanted to or not. Frightening when you see and hear the underside of an Osprey's wing against the camera and it fills my monitor. I don't like wind anyway but watching these chicks is horrible, I can't not watch I want to know they are alright.

While I am writing this EJ is stood hunched up on the other side of the nest hanging on with her talons. she must prefer standing up I would prefer her lying down, don't want the wind tipping her Majesty off the nest.

Bye for now, hoping and praying that tomorrow evening will be calm for the ringing and tagging and all of the three chicks are there.

Tagging and ringing

Best of luck for this tricky procedure. Hope the chicks stay nice and calm, and that there's not too much wind for the tree climbers.
Swift climb, chick in bag, down to the experts waiting below, chicks checked and records taken, ringed and tagged and returned to the nest.

We'll be carrying out our last Tag and Ring this Saturday. Hopefully this will bring our total of tagged & ringed Red Kite chicks to 15. But there are others which hopped it before we could get to them!!
Here is a collage of the little beauties!
All good wishes from

June, Your collage of the Red Kite chicks is wonderful. Good luck for Saturday and hope you get the right weather and no chicks hop it this time.

I found out on the RSPB site that Roy Dennis is the licence holder for ringing Osprey chicks, I hope he can fit them all in his schedule. As you said in your post, some hopped it before being rung. I hope that does not happen to our chicks as at least one has managed to be airborne over the nest for a few seconds then jumped up again a few times. They look a bit large as well, I would love to hold one on the ground but not up that tree which I think is a pine pole actually.

Ben, Sandra, Cartman, Ann and all the other Osprey lovers please keep everything crossed for tonight that they have good weather. Thank you.

Ann Please do not fly away

Nothing happening, regarding ringing so far tonight and cant see it happening now,as its getting late. There was a bit of a wind but I wouldnt say it was that bad.If they are not quick,I can see one of the youngsters being off the eyrie,if his/her wing flapping gets any stronger..!

..... and the camera has been off for quite a while now; at least on my system.

sandra the camera hasn't been off. You may have to check your pc. Roy Dennis called off the ringing last night as the chicks were too jumpy. Its going to rain today so that will subdue them enough he thinks so will review the situation. Watch this space lol. Good luck to all involved. ;-)

Hi Folks,

You were all having a busy time on BF last night sorry, I could not get on the Forum to say the ringing had been postponed. Strange when EJ gave her alarm call they all hit the deck and looked like plaice laid out flat. They laid like that for over 2 hours. No EJ to tell them the danger had gone, I sat with them till 1 and saw no EJ or Odin return.
I am sure they went out for a dinner with Frank while they had the chance.

So here we go again and we don't know what time ringing will be attempted. We thought after Roy had had his morning tea (breakfast) but still nothing and I think the chicks will be more jumpy today. They were very fit yesterday flapping and trying to fly but when that alert came down they went and as I said didn't move until nearly midnight when one had a call of nature and another had to have a stretch. Poor babies got no supper either.

Thank goodness both parents have been this morning.

I will try and keep you informed but don't think they will attempt ringing while the centre is open so keep your fingers crossed for tonight.

Morning Everybody,

I have just found out that they may be ringing the chicks at LG this morning about 8.45 am. For some reason I do not think they have made any public announcements sorry don't know how else to put that. Third time lucky and am praying can't keep fingers and toes crossed going shopping as always at this time and want to be back safe to see the event if it happens.

Just looked at the camera it is a beautiful morning and Odin had brought in breakfast and EJ and chicks were feeding.

Bye for now, only thing that will make me late are roadworks.

Thanks Ann. It is now a couple of minutes past nine and nothing happened yet. EJ sitting with chicks on nest. All looks peaceful so far.

Hope it happens this morning. To wait until the Centre closes tonight seems a long time. Those chicks look almost ready to go when they're flapping away on the edge of the nest. Good luck to Richard, Roy, Ian and the rest of the team for a safe and succcessful outcome

Hi Sandra, Daisy and Everybody Else,

Sorry to keep doing this but we don't think the ringing will be this morning as the centre opens at 10. We are guessing it will be tonight and guessing is all we can do I am afraid.

I got back in time despite all our big roadworks and I hadn't a clue how to get back home, don't drive much and I only went shopping.

Checked camera before I went out and Odin had just delivered breakfast and EJ and 3 chicks were tucking in. They are making a lot of noise so sure they know something is up but will not be caught unawares this morning by anything that is for sure.

I can't believe they are near fledging as EJ is still feeding them, spoilt babies. Don't think one could tackle a freshly landed fish yet unless it was a tiddler.

You all know where I will be today and as soon as I hear a chink of a ladder I will let you all know. For those going out have a lovely day it doesn't look so good here.

I also reckon it will be this evening if at all. I think time is definitely running out now.

Presumably the reason for not doing it while the centre is open is that the centre facilities will be needed for tagging.

I think next year, the RSPB at Loch Garten should allow Ann (The Osprey Godmother) to ring the young,as a tribute to her devotion to these birds over the past few years. :-O
