I also reckon it will be this evening if at all. I think time is definitely running out now.

NO RINGING OR TAGGING OF THE YOUNG LOCH GARTEN OSPREYS this year.

You were correct about time running out Daisy.

Now can you please PM myself with tonights Lottery numbers please ? :-O

Thanks Daisy,

You have just beaten me to it. I must admit I wasn't looking forward to posting the news, it is very sad that there will be no ringing or tagging of the chicks and the first time it has ever happened at Loch Garten since ringing began.

Ben, I would be very honoured to be present at ringing the chicks. I was hoping to have a couple of days in Scotland this year to see the Ospreys and was told Loch of the Lowes was the easiest to get to but sadly arrangements did not work out. Looking at how the weather can change in a day up there I am glad I wasn't at either place this week.

I can only hope next year is a better one.

i think its a good call by roy and the team. First time in 40 years there has been no ringing but the best decision for the birds. You should give them a name this year as they've decided not to at the centre this year.

A privilege I shall treasure!

I agree. Maybe Ann will be allowed to participate in the procedures another year. Health & Safety permitting, it is so lovely to witness such events.
This morning, I went with our Red Kite Team, to Wing Tag and Ring one, two, or three chicks - we just didn't know what we'd find.
One live healthy chick and two unhatched eggs.
For the first time since I began volunteering in 2004, I was given the privilege of holding a young chick. We ringed it, but it was decided that it was just too young to tag.

Isn't it a beautiful chick - you can still see the white down as the feathers come through.

I shall be putting more pics on our website: www.friendsofredkites.org.uk

I'm so sorry that the Loch Garten Team will not be able to carry out their intended procedures, but a wise decision.

I think next year, the RSPB at Loch Garten should allow Ann (The Osprey Godmother) to ring the young,as a tribute to her devotion to these birds over the past few years. :-O

Hi Everybody,

We are still not decided if the chick made its first flight, if it flew up to the post above the nest that is not counted and the other two chicks were watching there. If it flew around which I think it did as their heads followed it, that is a flight.

In the middle of that, it was out of camera range a long time to me, we had an intruder alert from EJ who is still not happy. Odin delivered a fish, then the intruder got too near for EJ's liking and she is shrieking and mantling and trying to serve fish. I was only making a coffee and am out of breath rushing when I heard her shouting. I think I better have a lie down in a dark room somewhere.

Here is a clip for you to watch of the chick (thanks Alison) not sure if it is the one posted by Daisy. Enjoy!

Here is another of the chick landing back on the nest. EJ arrives first.

I posted my own footage Ann but it would have been pretty similar to the one Alison got.

Great news and congratulations to the team and volunteers at Loch Garten.I honestly just had an Inkling, that the young bird had fledged. The wing exercises of the past few days, suggested it was anyday now for Lift Off. B :)

Hi Everybody,

The second chick at Loch Garten fledged last night Friday 16 July 2010 at 18.37 and once flying did not want to return to the nest. It arrived for breakfast this morning to a very wet and soggy nest the chicks look really fed up with the weather and I don't blame them. They have just got their wings and want to fly. No.3 still to go yet. Here is a clip of the chick fledging.

Hi Everybody,

The third and final chick has flown tonight for the first time and I missed it as usual but here is a link to the clip on UTube showing it flying off and landing back on the nest.
It is still a "home bird" as it has flown back to the nest where it is lying all alone, the other two being more adventurous.

I hope No.3 does stay around the nest for some time as I hate empty nest syndrome.

I had the good fortune to watch it live and also download the video. I won't post my clips as you already have Alison's.

I watched him messing around all day, stopping and starting, until he finally plucked up the courage and jumped. One quick circuit and kerflump, he was back! It was great :)
