I've been watching a lonely egg for at least 20 minutes, no sign of either parent. Anyone know roughly how long an egg can be left before it gets too cold and becomes non-viable (if that is the term?). I realise ambient temperature , rain etc would have a big effect, but I was getting worried. More risk of predator attack too unless a parent bird is perched nearby.
Phew, as I type this, Lady has come back but there has been very little seen of the Laird today. Has Lady eaten, does anyone know? I wondered if she felt she had to go fishing for herself.
I must say these nest-cams are compelling viewing (like many of us I am watching Loch Garten too) - it is very interesting to watch the behaviour of the ospreys.
The answer is a very long time. I have seen eggs left for five hours on a cold night and they still hatched. Not recommended though.
At Woods Hole last year the male did his shifts beut the female never did hers. Not surprisingly the nest failed.
