Greetings!

I'm updating my will this week, and I'm interested in finding the best conservation group to leave part of my estate to.

I'm looking for a group that focuses on preserving bird habitat and attempts (so far as possible) to save endangered species of birds.

I am NOT interested in the LEAST in donating to groups that have other fringe political interests like global warming, anti-bush/anti-U.S./anti-war/anti-energy or other things like that. I'm NOT interested in groups that have any leftist political agenda or use any of their money to try and shape international policy toward socialism or globalism. I do NOT want any of my money being funneled to third-world or islamic causes, and I'm not in the LEAST bit interested in supporting radical environmentalist causes that use violence or non-legal means to promote their agenda. I'm only interested in finding a group or groups that puts 100% of their time and energy into bird preservation and habitat preservation, and into educating the public about wildlife and the environment.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Also... please... no lectures on why I should change my mind on the type of group I'm looking for - your input will fall on deaf ears.

Consider the Nature Conservancy

They are not the only org that I belong to . . but probably the one I feel the best about as they more or less quietly take the direct action of preserving habitat . . .without a lot of that "in your face" attitude that so many environmental groups seem proud of.

From their site:

This NGO is based in Bulgaria and one of its priorities are wetlands and especially their bird fauna. Lots of activities have been done on this matter so far, most of them voluntarily, but nowadays this is not enogh for more general cations...

Well, I wouldn't give The Nature Conservancy one thin dime. They are already the richest NGO on the planet and their lack of ethics and cronyism have gotten them into trouble for years. The Washington Post did an interesting expose on them a few years ago, I think in 2003 or 2004, and even that was after many of us involved with NGOs had heard horror stories for some time (kickbacks, oil drilling on protected land, logging, development on trust property, etc., etc., etc.).

My personal take on this org is that they make big oil and big business look "green" in exchange for multi-million dollar donations. They are just way too deep into bed with too many government agencies for them to be a bona fide conservation organization.

As Dave said, I'd vote for local Audubon chapters, too, NOT national, since the local people do more to preserve and restore habitat and get educational material into classrooms than all the fancy new "regional centers" that National Audubon is now favoring -- and probably why they cut off the historical % of dues back to the chapters: in order to pay for these fancy new centers. On top of which, National Audubon's magazine has taken full-page, inside cover ads from Shell Oil, one of the worst polluters of the planet, particularly overseas where they aren't held accountable for their disasters (e.g., northern Africa). Yet another bloated, top-heavy organization that's cutting off its grass roots to play politics with the big boys.

Probably best of all, though, would be one of your own local groups whose work you know and who would be especially appreciative of your donation. Your "think globally, act locally" legacy would not only be directly helpful, but it would set a great example to others who knew you (if I may use the past tense ) to act in kind or get involved in some other way.
