Looking for pointers on where to bird in NZ during early winter. (1 Viewer)

Kia ora and hello!

I will be visiting new zealand in June and I wonder where should I go for a day birding trip!( will be based in auckland) I am time constrained, as I would probably only have one day all to myself, so I am hoping to do as much as possible in one day.

My goal is to see as many NZ endemics as possible! I've done some research and Ive heard Tahwaranui is decent, any thoughts dear kiwi members? Besides, i'll be driving from christchurch to queenstown through lake tekapo. Appreciate it if someone could let me know what are the worthwhile birding stops along this route.

hello mjh, thank you for your prompt response. Yes I forgot to mention I thought about that however there are no ferries on the day I am free. Any alternatives that you can take of?

Hows birding in winter anyways? I understand auckland does not get as cold as say the south
