HI,

Am planning a month in Madagascar and looking for guides or fellow birders to share some of the birding with? If anyone else has similar plans or recommendations please share?
Thanks

Four of us did a trip of about 3 weeks with Andry Falimanantsoa of "Madagascar Tour Guide" and it turned out well, we pretty much cleaned up on the endemics and other targets. Andry added local tour guides at most of the sites. You can contact him at [email protected]

Thanks so much for this - I will do!

Please not that Helmet Vanga hasn't been seen outside of Masoala / Marojejy for over a year.
Both sites involve an internal flight and add to the expenses. Birding e.g. Masoala is no punishment though, with many good birds to be found next to Helmet Vanga.

I'm also planning a trip but it will be late 2025. Have made contact with Madagascar Tour Guide - impressed with speed and clarity of communication so far

Thanks so much for responding . I’ve got a rough outline that I’m planning to look through . May I get back to you once I’ve had time to do a little more research with this lead so far ?

We're planning something similar. How much approximately did this set you back (just the tour and what it included)?

I too am planning an October trip to Madagascar. I'd hoped that I could fly from Tana to Mahjanga, Toliara, and Tolagnaro (all flights in country require a return to Tana) and rent a self drive car or 4x4 as needed. Preliminary searches say there aren't rental vehicles at these cities. Does anyone know if one can get a vehicle outside of Tana?
Although I like to drive and drove big-rigs in my younger days, I don't know that I want to try the drives as to get to the minimum number of places I'd want to see would be over a week of drive time, and that's assuming the best which is almost always a fools errand.

Mahalo ... Steve

Hi Steve - did you manage to get anything sorted? I'm still looking so happy to do some sharing if that works for you?

The easiest way forward is:
1. charter a car + driver from Tana to Toliara and take a flight back to Tana (or the other way around). It will be easier to find a car + driver than to try and rent yourself, and the driver will drive back to Tana.

2. charter a car + driver from Tana to Mahajunga and take a flight back to Tana... So exactly the same as toward Toliara. You have your best chances for Mad. Pratincole (supposed you don't go to Masoala) and Mad. Harrier (supposed you don't go to Bemenavika, and you have a lower chance between Anja Reserve and Isalo in the South) on that stretch, so I'd consider it a must-do.

For both 1. and 2., you can charter the car + driver to visit Andasibe / Mantadia (going back and forth between Tana and Andasibe).

I haven't been to Tolagnaro, but unless you're really after Red-tailed Newtonia and you're looking for a new site for Yellow-bellied Sunbird-Asity, I wonder why you wouldn't fly to e.g. Masoala (so you have a very good chance to see Helmeted Vanga)?

If you want to inquire about chartering vehicles, I can recommend contacting Alain at : Colourful Natures - Onvergetelijke reizen in Madagaskar
He lives part of the year in Madagascar and can arrange everything + he's someone I would trust a 100%.

This report is excellent and is the one I used to base my trip around . Thoroughly recommend looking at this in detail thanks for the advice

Thank you to everyone who has given me some advice regarding time in Madagascar . Having finished a very intensive and interesting 3 weeks am now ‘ recuperating ‘ in Mauritius.. looking for those pink doves !
