Malaysia (Bukit Fraser vs Cameron Highlands) (1 Viewer)

I last visited Bukit Fraser in 2006 and at that time the cheapest place to stay was the Puncak Inn at 55 Ringgits per night. Does anyone know if that is still the case?

Also, I am contemplating going to the Cameron Highlands instead of Bukit Fraser because as a backpacker destination it is cheaper (and I think there is a direct bus which makes things easier). Bukit Fraser has white-thighed langurs, siamang, Malaysian water shrews, slow loris......what does the Cameron Highlands have? The same? And is the forest much the same at both or is one better than the other?

Cameron Highlands probably has cheaper options but mostly about casinos and resorts. Forest much better at Fraser and without the crowds - school holidays mean Cameron Highlands will be busy.

Cameron can be great, though without a vehicle getting around is more difficult than Fraser's as it's a much larger area.

With mammals in mind, Fraser's wins hands-down. Fraser's Hill still has Tiger, Marbled Cat, several sp flying squirrel, Siamang, both leaf monkey + civets, loris etc etc - obviously most of these are extremely unlikely but give you an idea of how the forest is.

Puncak Inn still the cheapest, and best option though a fair bit of walking is still required but it is easy enough to hitch around from mid-morning.

Camerons Highlands has easier Malaysian Partridges, and a few higher elevation birds not at Fraser's any more though most of these are common species outside Malaysia.

Cameron Highlands is a crying mess nowadays. Plenty of erosion due to uncontrolled farming and land clearance. Its incredible to see how the farming community uses food security as leverage to further environmental destruction at any cost.

Absolutely a very sad state of affairs. As James said though the higher altitude species which are no longer present at Fraser are still hanging on but hard to believe that will last much longer.

Is the food production truly of commercial value still in a regional not Malaysian (excl. tourist value) context? Obviously here in SG everything is imported and a lot from Malaysia but commonly the crops being grown in the Cameron Highlands are no longer here anyway as apparently cheaper (at least based on availability) to fly produce from Australia, California or Sth Africa. Most of the vegetables/fruit sourced from Malaysia or regional countries seem to be things not mass produced further afield and hence things not based on the altitude of the Cameron Highlands?
