Mallorca 2012 (1 Viewer)

Hi stuartg, I will be here for the whole of July and would be happy to help in any way that I can. PM me if you want my mobile number and/or e-mail. I can tell you what is being seen and where. Also I can help with specific sites for any target birds you have. I know of one local guide who may be able to help but you have already been given that information so I hope that works out for you.Mike.

Hi Guys
I going to Majorca in a couple of weeks, can anybody recommend a good car hire company. cheers

I used mallorcaairport.co.uk, which took a car from AUTOMOTIVE CARS - good car, full insurance (no excess) and good fuel policy (collect full-return full, not like some on Mallorca). And cheap - four days, 48 euro when I booked.

Be aware, many car rentals on Mallorca (and Spain in general - eg Gold Cars) supply a car with a tank of petrol, charge you for it and say return it empty. This is a rip-off - usually the amount they charge for fuel is higher than pump prices and it is almost impossible to return empty, so you pay for fuel you don't use. Read details before renting.

Hi Mike

OH and I used Avis Car Hire based at Mahon/Mao airport at Menorca when we went to Menorca in May 2012. We had no problems with it whatsoever. OH footed the bill if you want to know about costs (it was a birthday present to me). We did not travel far so the tank of petrol we got lasted for the 2 weeks.

When we returned the car early in the morning for our plane trip back to the UK, the return of the vehicle was arranged through our sailing company to Avis. So all in all the return of vehicle was not a problem either.

You really need to plan ahead when you collect, and return your car to be sure it fits in with your plans.

Look forward to hearing all about your holiday trip :t:

Kathy

I flew with Easyjet so got a discount using Europcar, easy pick up from the airport, full tank on pick up and full tank when you return it. Only problem was that the petrol station I'd seen at the airport was on the way out, not on the way in, so I couldn't put any petrol in when I took it back. Just be aware when hiring a car that some places require a valid credit card to leave a deposit, and the don't accept all cards so just be aware - I was ok - another group of tourists at the Europcar desk weren't however.

Interesting Nick - will remember that too.

Also to add to what you have said - that some cars use Diesal petrol like the one we had, so be careful what petrol that you use. ;)

Last time I was there we got flights with Monarch and a car deal through them with Sixt which was very good. Airport pickup and drop off and not too much hassle over some damage to the door where some **** tried to break in!

Nick

I've suffered twice from the return car empty deal - even when I was told by a company rep to mention it and they'd refund the difference. Over 40€ each time! The last time I used the same company (Hiper but booked through Holiday Autos in the UK) I was told that up to seven days you return the car full, but more than seven days and you had to return it empty.

On my last visit (May this year) I used Motos Formentor and got a great deal.

It pays to shop around and check the fine details. Only once have I had a rubbish car - a bright red Hyundai Atoz. I felt like Postman Pat driving it around!!

We were in Mallorca in April and got caught in the 90 euro leave back empty scam, for that is what it is! We booked through Travel Republic and there did not appear to be an option to refuse the full tank. Also if you did not pay for the extra insurance they wanted a deposit of 600 euro against possible damage. Must be more careful in our choice next time (Car was good though)

The most fantastic display of Eleanora's falcons hawking dragonflies over the depuradora late yesterday evening at the back of s'Albufera. Over 20 birds, brilliant. Also big numbers of Cattle egrets, including one strange one, sooty black body and forewing tinged dusty grey, otherwise normal. No idea about this bird. 27 Marsh harrier, Squacco, Woodchat, 2 Bee-eaters and a very untypical White wagtail.

27th june, salbufera
savis warbler just before vistor center, start of board walk, also 6 sp redshank, 4 greenshank, green sand
s.g.

Three or four young Bee-eaters hanging around the back of s'Albufera so maybe they bred successfully there. Three adults nearby. Also Garganey at the Depuradora and an Osprey over. Lots of Common swift moving through, they have left our area already so a sad day when it all falls silent. I love watching them scream round the apartments here.

Hi Folks
Is it possible by following the Ses Puntes track in S'Albufera to reach the viewing platform at the water works?

regards
Sean

Hi Sean

Yes. Just follow the Ses Puntes track through the pines, over the cattle grid where there's a viewing platform on your right, then a derelict house on the left, then you reach a locked gate. There's an access point on the side, then follow the track through a derelict finca/small-holding and you then reach a chain across the path with a house on your right. The road then heads off along the side of the water works. When the chain-link fence on your right runs out there's a signed track to the Depuradora with more chain-link fence and thick bushes (on the right). Take the right fork at the junction and then continue until you reach the viewing platform on your right.

Best wishes

Martin

I was in Mallorca at the end of June and having parked at the depuradora decided to walk to the Ses Puntes Viewing platform, as I have done on previous visits. I geared up for tangling with the dogs at the small-holding so it was with mixed feelings I found the small-holding is now disused. Anyway, my point is that the gate at the end of the track was locked and the gaps at the side bricked up. There was a sign on the gate saying no entry to S'Albufera, so in theory you can't get from Ses Puntes to the Depuradora - speaking for myself, I was committed and climbed over the gate!

Stew

Er..yes, we all climb over the gate, not sure we are supposed too though! Thanks for pointing that out. Just been for a night walk and got Scop's, Long-eared and Barn owl, loads of Stone curlew but no Nightjars all year this year. Shame as they normally breed just out the back here.

We had the same problem in April. We came from the depuradora side. Realising we didn't have a day permit from the visitor's centre, to enter the reserve, we didn't feel good about hopping over. But if you have a permit, leaving and re-entering here is not a problem.
Nice Moltoni's 2cyr female just beyond the gates, Hoopoe, Moorish Gecko in the derelict buildings some recompense though...;)
