Mallorca 2013 (1 Viewer)

This evening at the Sa Roca hide:

3 Wood Sandpiper, 3 Marbled Duck, 1 Green Sandpiper, at least 4 Little Stint, plus the 4 Curlew Sandpiper still present.

Chris, many thanks for the details, a great find and it was seen in the same spot by our number one birders on the same day so I guess he will be doing the report so no need for you to do it thanks, unless you want to! I went twice but it had gone by then sadly. I will keep looking. Flamingo numbers now increasing daily and a few Honey Buzzard through. All looking good for a bumper autumn. Mike

Highlights today during a brief trip round the main hides at s´Albufera: 35 Spotted Redshank, 1 Knot, 1 Curlew, 1 Ruff, 5 Little Stint, 4 Curlew Sand., really close views of a juv. Woodchat Shrike from Bishop I, Osprey, 3 Whinchat and only my second Hoopoe for the trip so far.

Just read that I missed a juvenile White-winged Black tern this morning at s´Albufera.

It would have been a first for me (if my memory is correct).

I really must make an effort to get out more, especially as I´m ´on site´!

Over 120 Bee-eaters going west over Calvia today and a male Montagu's harrier. Also a few Wheatears, Willow warblers and a Whinchat.

Hello everybody!
I'll have a 10 days stay at Portals Nous with my wife in the beginning of October. It's not a birding trip but I was still hoping to find places of particular interest nearby.

The bus schedules I've found online only seems to be for the tourist season and ends September 30. Does anyone know where to find bus schedules for the Autumn and Winter?

Hi,

For birding in Calvià you can visit this public web page: http://www.birdingcalvia.com/

Balearic Shearwater

Balearic Shearwater returns to the islands the last week of August or the first week of September.

This year my first shearwaters were observed the 1st of September; a group of 12 birds rafting in the bay of Santa Ponsa.

The Mirador de Malgrats over the bay of Santa Ponsa is a great place for Balearic Shearwater. One hour before sunset, birds start to raft off the coast of Malgrats.

Any other early observations of Balearic Shearwaters?

Still looking for the first birds in the area of Cabrera.

Miguel

El Toro Map

Dear Mike

As an irregular visitor to Calvia, please can you let me know where "El Torro" is for future reference ?

Many thanks - Mark

A map of the route I use for birding in the area of El Toro.

http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/miguel-mcminn/el-toro-calvia-mallorca/#.Ui8vvhYs9TM

The old military coastal gun defense area is now private hunting land.
I get through a very big hole in the fence. But you shouldn't do that. Just a warning. Stay along the coast and don't get near the shooting range.

The fields near the road are very interesting. We had a few cranes in this area last winter, and Stone-curlews are very common.

The lighthouse is a good spot for seabirds entering the bay of Palma, but access is restricted at this moment.

My favourite seabird watch point (waypoint on the map) is near Malgrats - Mirador Malgrats-Santa Ponsa. A must for Balearic Shearwater; from September to June, a hour before sunset. This is a public area, and it can get a bit crowded some days.

Thanks everyone for information on El Torro and Calvia, much appreciated.
I saw one lonely Balearic shearwater last Wednesday 4th September at Cap de Ses Salines just after daybreak. Mike

Hello Mike, Thank you for the observation.
First birds returning to the Balearic Islands are breeding males. Some years we get the birds in late August.
I'll be staying on Dragonera tomorrow.
Hope to observe a few at sea, and probably some will visit the colony during the night.

Happy birding

I could see 16 Balearic Shearwaters from Punta de n'Amer on sunday, flying south (so probably going to Cabrera). One Storm Petrel and several Corys too.

Thanks mcminn, I would like to know more about the movements of both Cory's and Balearic shearwaters, particularly where they breed and their winter dispersal. Do you know where this information may be available? If you can help that would be great. Good luck on Dragonera. mike

Hi Craig

Several books that I have here (in s´Albufera) refer to a variety of whales and dolphins. One cites 21 species of marine mammals in the Med (though not necessarily around the Balearics).

A picture may help but if it´s only the tail one would probably need to be lucky, or need an expert.
