Thanks Mike - the dodgy takeaway was in the UK the evening before we left, but its impact remained with us! A better day today! Started at Toucan Marsh, where the scaup wasn't too difficult ('though a fem tufted with a large face blaze had me going for a few moments!). As you say, there was a nice selection of wilfowl - the male red crested pochards looking especially fetching! I went to the Depuradora next. A bit shocked to find the normal approach road (entrance by the bus garage) closed about 200m before the track to the viewing tower. No problem though, just necessitated a bit of walking, which produced a small (c8) flock of skylarks and 4 lapwings (both Mallorca ticks for me). At the Depuradora there werelots more wildfowl, a few waders (common and green sandpipers) and a really nice water pipit. I moved on to Son Real, where the sun came out and temperatures rose. Among a nice selection of birds were 8+ Thekla larks on the beach-side scrub, a Sandwich tern just offshore and a solitary Audouin's gull on the rocky outcrops. On the way back to the car park I was puzzled by an unfamiliar song of mixed harsh and sweet notes. This turned out to be a singing crossbill, but it sounded very different to my recollection of the song in the UK. Best bird was a siskin, which called as it flew into a nearby pine tree. With hoopoes, lots more black redstarts and robins, and an osprey along the way, not a bad day's birding! Stew
