[QUOTE="StewB, post: 3163136, member: 32149"] Thanks Mike, a real shame our visits to Toucan Marsh didn't coincide. Very best wishes for Friday. After I posted last night Tess & I went out for a coffee & beer along Puerto Pollensa sea front. Just before 9pm a long-eared owl flew over our shoulders and into a pine tree! It then made several more flights from tree to tree, before appearing to settle in a tree outside the Hotel Eolo. That was some way to nail myMallorca bogey bird! Today was a different proposition. In full wet weather gear I spent the morning at S'Albufera. Kingfishers were very active over the canal along the entrance track, where there was a nice roost of 7+ night herons. I was delighted and surprised in equal measure to see a female little bittern in one of the small stands of reed on the far bank - is it unusual for these to over-winter? There were 40+ Kentish plovers in front of Sa Roca, together with a nice selection of wildfowl. Es Cibollar provided 3 adult and 3 juv greater flamingos, always nice to see in the north. A seemingly fruitless treck to the observation tower produced 3 reed buntings just as I was about to leave. On my way back to Puerto Pollensa I called in at C'an Cuarassa. There's storm damage to the screens, so the 4+ snipe and greenshank flew off as I arrived, but a great white egret flew over and landed near the entrance. As I watched the egret, a spotless starling flew up onto the telegraph wires over the track! After returning to the appartment and drying out, I decided to go to Mortitx - the rain had stopped and augered well for grounded raptors needing to feed. The raptors obliged, with lots of views of up to five black and three griffons at a time, and a displaying pair of booted eagles (though no Bonelli's this visit). A couple of peregines added their support. Most spectacular was the carpet of black redstarts - I would suggest many hundreds, they were everywhere! A supporting cast of robins, blackcaps and masses of song thrushes made this one of the best spectacles of my (many) years of birding! Once again, the weather isn't looking great for tomorrow..
