Hi Martin, could you please help me by identifying this caterpillar? Unfortunately it was found in Fuerteventura not Mallorca.
Hi Keith
Not a problem. It's the larva of a stunning little moth, Polytela cliens (Felder & Rogenhofer, 1874), a member of the Noctuidae, Glottulinae. They feed internally (and later externally) on the bulbs, leaves and seeds of various Amaryllidaceae (including Pancratium).
See http://www.lepiforum.de/lepiwiki.pl?Polytela_Cliens
Best wishes
Martin

Favourites were Hoopoe and 3 Eleonora Falcons near where we were staying between Alaró and Consell.
Hi
I think you were very lucky to see Eleanora's. They are mainly a summer breeder from May onwards, migrating back to Madagascar for the winter, but I'd heard that some now remain on Mallorca through the winter months.
Best wishes
Martin

Hi Kevin. Philip goes to Can Guidet quite a lot and always does very well. As you know, I am hopeless at giving links to maps etc but I always know how to get there! It is near the airport off the Manacor road. You can Google it and it gives a map. We can meet up wherever you like. Son Real was great as usual but nothing different there, still Hawfinch and Siskin though. Salobrar will be worth a visit if I promise not to buy Jane lunch again. Mike

Can Guidet

Hi Mike, where is Can Guidet?

Hi Mike,
Can Guidet (is a water laggon of depurated water from sewers for irrigation) it is very close to Palma and the Airport, but it is not easy to arrive because it is between small pathways in the surrondings of the urban area of Palma. (I attached a part of the Majorca Birding Map where you can find it with the number 49).

This afternoon, in middle of very cold showers and some storm, there were several red-rumped swallow (probably 20 or more), 19 garganeys and lot of crag martins and 2 o 3 sand martin.

I hope if you try you can find the Bassa of Can Guidet.
Regards

Thanks Mike.
The first Yellow Wagtail was seen yesterday and I have just been watching groups of House Martins from my apartment flying north. Mike

Pas de Pescadors

It is the itinerary number 8 at the "Mallorca Birding Map. 75 best birding points".
It is an old military non-paved path to an abandoned batteries, a very nice place to walk not only for birding but also for stunning landscapes.

Pleasent Sunday walk. Birds seen inluded Peregrine, Kestral, Booted Eagle, Ravens, Sardinia and Balearic Warblers, Goldfinches. An Osprey passed over.
Nice view of Dunnock, Crossbills in the wood by the enterence of the walk.

Mike

A few Mediterranean gulls are at Can Pastilla. A Red-throated pipit and a Jack Snipe have been seen today at Cami des Polls, Albufera. Things are hotting up...Mike

Lots of Scop's Owls calling in Parc Mondrago tonight, they seem to be everywhere. They must be newly arrived migrants. I believe they are a partial migrant as some do overwinter here. Anyway, it's good to hear them again. Mike

Mallorca - accommodation

Hi

Looking at possibly having a week in North East Mallorca mid-May, looking for a good boutique hotel, ideally close to some good restaurants, easy access in the morning for the birding areas, good food, quiet, a little bit sophisticated.. anyone have any recommendations...?

I can't really help you with that one Scodger, hopefully someone else can. I am based in the south but I will ask around and see what others say. Mike
