Mallorca 2016 (1 Viewer)

Hi

Looking at possibly having a week in North East Mallorca mid-May, looking for a good boutique hotel, ideally close to some good restaurants, easy access in the morning for the birding areas, good food, quiet, a little bit sophisticated.. anyone have any recommendations...?

I think there are 2 nices hotels in Port de Pollença, one is the Hotusa Uyal, one classical for birders, the other I think is more sophisticated and probably more expensive, and it is the Hotel Illa d'Or, both in Port de Pollença, quite more quiet and charming than the big hotels in Alcudia or Platja de Muro.

I hope it can help you, but i have not been in these hotels, only by the comments of some birders.

Our tickets have just come for our holiday from 26th March for a fortnight. This time we are flying with British Airways from Heathrow T5, which means we have now used seven different airports to get to Mallorca over the years. As for hotels in the NE, there are some very pleasant ones all on the seafront at Port de Pollenca, but you will be paying a lot at the Illa d'Or. The Uyal is quite large (not really a boutique hotel) and a long way from the Boquer Valley, whilst others open in mid-May include the Daina, Mirador and Sis Pins, all much closer to the foot of the Boquer. We stay at the Pollensa Park, which again is hardly a boutique hotel, but does have good family accommodation and is close to La Gola and the Llenaire Road.
Whilst on the subject of Port de Pollenca, is there any update on the making of the seafront road one way (which direction?), as this could affect the buses and make it harder to get from the Pollensa Park area to or from Albufera. Hugh Matthews- Northampton

A nice sunny morning spent in the very good company of Kevinh at Salobrar de Campos. There was a cold wind though. About 40 Flamingos, 120 Dunlin, 12 Curlew, Little stint, Golden plover, Grey plover, Redshank, Greenshank and a Water rail.
Overhead, lots of frisky Marsh harrier, Booted eagle and several Red kites which are happily doing very well here on the Island thanks to the very hard work of the locals. Mike.

Also lots of House martins flying around and a single Swallow.

Hi Pep
Very nice!
A species I've yet to see, on Mallorca or anywhere! Recorded once on 'my' patch - back in 1994!!

I have only ever seen one Martin, in Sussex, I too have yet to see one in Mallorca. I think they are sometimes seen on the central plain but I have not been there recently. Mike

I broke my telescope badly so I sent it back to Swarovski in Austria.
It has been returned looking as new with lots of new parts. There was no charge, all the work was done completely free. What a marvelous service. Bravo Swarovski. Mike

Very nice Mike. I believe they are flava at this time of the year. I did have some details about Yellow wagtails in Mallorca so I will try to find it. Mike.

Hi Mike
I haven't got your personal email so this 'thank you' comes through the forum. Due to a very serious illness in the family my wife and I have not been able to visit our apartment in Port de Pollensa for some time and won't be there for many months yet. The forum is really excellent in keeping me up to date with the great birding on the island. Many thanks to you and all forum correspondents.
Phil

A few Mediterranean gulls have been seen along the south coast and the Red-throated pipits lingered more than a day at Albufera. Also a Slender-billed gull has been seen at Albufereta. Mike
