North Majorca 25th Sep- 5th Oct 2016
Returned from a ten day visit to the Island last week, weather and bird wise another very enjoyable visit to Majorca
I must admit I have never seen the island so busy and found it very difficult to find accommodation and Hire Car in the Pollenca area even though flights were pretty easy to come by.
Birding was restricted to early mornings only and the odd evening, this was due to promising the other half that I would not disappear for the day as it was her time off work. Since it never got light until 0730 it was soon pretty hot by about 1030 thus a nice time to head to the beach anyways.
Only one shower of rain in the whole ten days surprised me as on previous September visits I have experienced massive thunderstorms so we must have caught it lucky this time.
Mind you the Mossies at S,Albufera early morning were relentless even after applying lots of Jungle Formula Xtra Strength
Migrant wise only Redstarts,Whinchat and the R B Shrike, the latter which frequented the school rails opposite the Boquer car park were about the only birds of note oh and the B N Grebe & Wood Sandpiper on Bishop 2 pond S,Albufera.
I did manage an early morning drive to Formentor and just as well because heading back it was bumper to bumper traffic going the other way, picked up the usual Eleonora Falcon,Blue Rock Thrush & Balearic Warbler at the Cap plus Booted Eagle at Casa Velles along with Redstarts and Firecrest on the way back.
Great views of Osprey fishing the Grand canal S,Albufera on the 1st Oct,it was perched on the old pylon just opposite the new viewing area at the top of the reserve entrance road, just before the dog leg. I watched it attempt an unsuccessful dive which loosened off a few of its feathers before flying off to try its luck elswhere.
Nice views of Three Little Bitterns on the stretch of path over the three bridges a few days later, and also counts of 20 plus Stone Curlew in field next to Sa Roca hide on my two visits here plus feeding G R Warbler and Chiffies on reserve boardwalk section of path.
Watched a feral cat stalking Stone Curlews in the field next to Boquer Valley but Stone Curlew totally outfoxed it,mind you I can see these cats having an adverse affect when the birds are breeding.
Also count of about 20 Stone Curlew at far hide Can Cuerassa along with a lone Wheatear and lots of Swallow on 2nd Oct,all pools here very dry at that time.
Single Grey Plover at Albuferta on 30th plus G W Egret from viewing tower.
Next visit to Majorca planned for April- May 2017 so looking forward to that.
I would also like to say a big thanks to Mike for keeping this thread up to date and answering all the questions thrown at him, also to Craig Shaw & Stew B for their recent in depth blog and trip reports, great stuff
Cheers
