First Visit to Port de Pollenca

We have just arrived this afternoon in Port de Pollenca for a first ever visit to Mallorca, and having found the other posts on this thread to be highly helpful and informative, decided to add some of our own over the coming days. We are staying at a villa on the edge of town, not far from the Boquer valley, and since we are here without a car, will be doing our birding on foot and by public transport during the coming week. Hopefully if this proves successful, our sightings and comments may be useful and helpful to other birders who are thinking about coming here to bird without a hire car. They may also provide a bit more information about what birds are still around and possible to see at the end of October during the autumn half term period.

Just a few hours here so far and its already looking like its going to live up to the expectations we have got from reading the previous posts on this thread!

Highlights so far during our first afternoon, all seen in and around our villa, or during the 15 minutes walk into town: several Booted Eagle (both light and dark phase birds), 1 Peregrine, 2 Hoopoe, 3 Serin, 3 Crossbill, several Common Redstart, plenty of Black Redstart and Chiffchaff, at least 3 Sardinian Warbler, and 1 Stonechat.

Haven't yet decided on any plans for tomorrow. Probably will just explore more in and around Port de Pollenca. There seems a lot of good birds to track down and photograph right on the doorstep!

thanks Ben.
sardinian warblers and,a pair of gadwall.

It seems some good rarities are being seen on Cabrera at the moment. Certainly October is the best time to be there. I will give a summary of all the birds seen when I get more news and have translated the messages. I believe an Orphean Warbler has been seen and a Moussier's Redstart appeared on one of the islands near Menorca. Mike

Sorry, it seems the Orphean warbler was seen by Maties at Albufera, not Cabrera.
A first for the Balearics was found on Cabrera, a Stock Dove, together with a Little bunting.
Trying to type this with my grandsons jumping all over me is challenging.
Off to Cley-next-the-Sea Tuesday, I haven't been there for over ten years. I hope it hasn't changed too much. Mike

First Visit to Port de Pollenca: Day 2

A very wet start to the day kept us birding around the villa this morning, but we still managed to see a nice range of species including a Blue Rock Thrush flying over, 6 Hoopoe together on a lawn, and when the rain finally abated a good selection of raptors including at least 4 Booted Eagle (both light and dark phase), 3 Eleonora's Falcon, 3 Peregrine and 1 Kestrel. Waves of migrating Song Thrush passed over during the morning, plus good numbers of Crag Martin and Swallow.

With the sun out this afternoon, we walked into town and visited La Gola where amongst the birds seen were a Fan-tailed Warbler, Northern Wheatear, a couple of Stonechat, several Common Redstart and a Common Sandpiper. There were also several butterflies on the wing, including Red Admiral, Large White, Cleopatra and Geranium Bronze.

A visit to the beach then produced Audouin's Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, 3 Sandwich Tern and several Shag.

I hope you won't be disappointed Mike, but Cley is very different to how it was 10 years ago. The new visitor centre is a mixed blessing, but it's good to have access to proper loos and a good hot cuppa. The wide bleak sea views are now interrupted by a huge wind farm. The shingle bank is not being maintained - managed retreat - and the North Hide, swept away by the 2013 tidal surge, has been replaced by a simple screen. So, different, but better or worse? Who knows!

Hope you have a great time though, and if as a Norfolk "local" I can reciprocate some of the wonderful help that you give to us when we visit Mallorca just drop me a message!

First Visit to Port de Pollenca: Day 3

We started the day with an early morning scramble up the flank of Talaia Vella on the Serra del Cavall Bernat, until the low cloud enveloped us. With visibility very poor we didn't spot many birds, but were pleased with a Blue Rock Thrush, and a couple of Firecrest in some pines at the end of our descent.

Later in the morning, with the sun finally burning away the last of the clouds, we decided to head off into the Boquer Valley. The path was very busy with Sunday walkers, as was the ridge of the Serra del Cavall Bernat above, so we were rather pessimistic about our chances of observing many birds. However, the walk turned out much more successful than expected with 4 Blue Rock Thrush, 4 Eleonora's Falcon, 5 Booted Eagle, and a few record shots of 4 Balearic Warbler, plus an Audouin's Gull, 2 Yellow-legged Gull and 1 Shag at the bay.

On returning to Port de Pollenca, to finish off the day, we popped into La Gola where, despite being tormented by a host of mosquitoes, we managed to pick up our first Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail, as well as finding and photographing 4 Fan-tailed Warbler.

Thanks Martin. I have been following the bird race on the information service. When I have translated all the highly amusing texts, I will post the results. I think the winning team achieved 114 species but perhaps Pep or Maties could help us out. Mike

Hello Martin,
Yes, the winner was a team from Spain, with Sandoval and 4 more with 114 species (really it was 113 + the golden eagle, who is a scape and should not be added), second was a team with Ricard Gutierrez and 4 more with 113 (112+the golden eagle) and third was a team from Holland with 108 species (107+ the golden eagle); our team with Juanjo, Maties and me were the last with only 60 species, but we did it only inside Cabrera ;).

I think they will upload the final scores and the list of the species at:

Hi Pep
Good to see it was really International and even though you were last you had a new species for the Balearic Islands (a Xixell Columba oenas Stock Dove) - it should have counted bonus points!

I agree Martin, at least ten points for finding a first for the Balearics!
Thanks Pep, I received over 130 texts yesterday and translating them is a real headache so you saved me the trouble!
Looking forward to Cley tomorrow, there are some great birds there at the moment so I hope a few of them stay just one more day..

First Visit to Port de Pollenca: Day 4

The day began with some excitement when first a Stone Curlew flew over the villa, and then not long after a harrier. Our first impression was that it was a juvenile Pallid Harrier. We managed to grab a record shot which we have attached, and would welcome confirmation.

As the weather forecast for the day was looking very good, we decided to head into the high mountains and visit the Cuber Reservoir, so we took the L354 bus from Port de Pollenca which departed at 10:30. We arrived at the Cuber Reservoir at about 11:45, and had about 4 hours to make the circuit so that we could catch the L354 bus back to Port de Pollenca. This was scheduled to be at the Cuber stop at 15:55, but in reality it was 15 minutes early, so if you use the bus, make certain you are at the stop in good time. The highlights of course were the raptors, which included about 10 Black Vulture, 3 Griffon Vulture, 3 Red Kite, 1 Peregrine and 2 Kestrel.

An early evening visit to La Gola produced 2 Fan-tailed Warbler.

In the group was a kind of long discursion about counting the golden eagle or not count it.

Thank you about the Stock dove, it is a kind os mistery in Majorca about this specie, some people, from Spain or Europe has reported it, but they never got neither one picture of it, so maybe it is not the first time, but only the first time completelly confirmed.

Hi Alexski, well done for the sighting although I'm not sure, I will leave it to the experts. It does look good though with that pale collar and number of "fingers" showing.
I hope someone can confirm. There are more sightings these days, a combination of more birders and better awareness but perhaps their migration route is changing, I believe they sometimes do.
I have only ever seen an adult male, not much problem with identifying that one. The jizz is also different with a distinctive flight action, quite unlike Montagu's.
Thanks for all your other posts too and enjoy the rest of your holiday, Mike

Sitting in a pub in Cley-next-the-Sea and just got a message that my birding pal Philip saw a Western Reef Heron at Albufereta.
Typical.
Anyway, I am very pleased for him, hope it stays for anyone wanting to see it. Mike

Hi Mike,
I saw a grey 'Little Egret' at Albufuretta in May and I'm sure others have reported it on here. Could it have been this Philip saw or was it a Western Reef Heron all along ? !!!! Robert
