Thanks both of you for the recommendations for birding locally. I will certainly get to at least one of them and I will let you know.
The UK was at its very best yesterday with a walk down the river Severn near Shrewsbury. The autumn tints looked beautiful and the birding was pretty good too. Very nice to be here for a while. Mike

I've put together some notes from my week on the Island at the end of September.

Great to be back on the Island. First day doing stuff but managed trip around La Gola and along Can Currasa road.
Bumped into John(beckcottage birder) at La Gola. Some 400 common starlings passed over. We both saw the juvenile Night Heron.
Other birds seen included 5 spotless starling, Great and Little Egrets, Purple Heron, Ravens, Common Kestrels, whinchats, fantailed, sardinian and cetti warblers. Several gray wagtails seen.
A great day, hopefully drying out the rest of the island.

Perfect Saturday. Visit to Albuferata tower, Maristany and ending up with Marvellous presentation on Mallorcan Subspps at La Gola by Christina.(sorry for the bad photo).

Bird seen today included Red Kite, Booted Eagles, Marsh Harriers, Great White, Little and Cattle Egrets, Stone Curlews(H), Common and red crested Pochards, Little Grebes, Moorhens, Fantailed and Cetti warblers.

And of course Subspps Crossbills.

Sorry, just returned from walk along the sands in Port de Pollensa. Several Audouins gulls, Yellow legged gulls and three sandwich terns on the rocks.

Booted eagles continue to be the most numerous migrant raptor yet again. Before last year, I hardly ever saw any entering or leaving Mallorca.
Last year there were record numbers and this year looks like being the same with 37 yesterday and 68 today.
It will be interesting to see what the final figure is.
Also some Hobby, migrant Kestrels and Black Kite.

A Short-eared owl at the Cap just now, quite a rare bird here in Mallorca.

This morning along Cami de Llenaire,
Peregrine 1
Black Vulture 1
Booted Eagle 2
Bonelli's Eagle 1
Swift so(pallid) c 30
Redstart 1
Later a Black Vulture was in a ploughed field, west of Torrent San Jordi Flew to within 10 metres never thought we would be eye to eye with a BV.

156 Booted eagles was the total for the long weekend at the Cap.
All birds flew to the south very high.
