Hi Everyone. I'm missing all this fabulous action sadly . I'm very unexpectedly in Manacor hospital where there is no internet so if anyone could kindly keep the thread up to date, I would very much appreciate it! I love reading all the news but hate not being able to see the birds themselves. I hope to be out in a week so I may not miss so much. What a great idea putting a recorder out at night! All the best. Some shots of the Red Rumped Swallow from last week at Tucan Marsh ,also one of a Stone Curlew that was also flying about amongst the massive numbers of Hirundines.

Today I had to leave Mallorca but four of my friends stayed and they saw something pretty spectacular. An adult Golden Eagle in the southwest corner of Albufera! I guess that's a bit of a Mallorca mega, right? Observers (I don't know which of them saw it first): Mark and Mo Constantine, Ian Lewington and Paul Morton.

In the meantime I gather the Golden Eagle is presumably one that escaped years ago. However, now I've just heard they have a male Pallid Harrier, currently perched in view at 200-300m, visible from a birding tower in the southeast corner of Albufereta!

Hi Magnus - realise it was a while ago but saw a male Pallid Harrier at Albufereta on the 6th April 2017 from the first tower.

Maybe same one?

Hi All. Thanks for keeping things going, it’s great to know what’s about. Some good birds and lots more to come. Soon there will hopefully be some glorious Red-footed falcons and more Lesser kestrels.
It gives me lots to dream about although as I have been nil-by-mouth for nearly a week, steak and kidney pie is foremost in my mind at the moment.
The infection is going down so I hope to be out in a week or so.

Can I ask a question to everyone please.
What time of day is best to see migrating raptors at Cap de Formentor? I plan to go there but will probably have to tie it in with a day trip with the family, so may only get an hour or so there.

Hi Nige. It’s a question I’ve often asked. I think nearly everybody agrees that between 11am and 1.30pm are peak times but raptors can come through any time. Certainly some or the rarest birds have been seen outside these times but you just never know.
I get to both the tower in spring and the Cap in autumn before first light as it’s amazing what goes through during the first hour or so, lots of species often not seen as migrants, ie nearly 1,000 Woodpigeon that I saw leaving Mallorca last year.
I think though, if you are there between the times suggested, you will hit it right.
It also depends on the day of course. I wish you well.

Yesterday five Black Vultures were low over the fields at Muro. A Great Reed Warbler, Reed Warbler and 4 Moustached Warblers were singing along the path from the Sa Font entrance of S'Albufera before the bridge (Amarador?). Marsh Harriers were skydancing throughout the park and four or five escorted the Golden Eagle off the park at Sa Font. Tawny Pipit and Thekla Lark were in the fields on route to the water treatment plant. The Pallid Harrier roosted at S'Albufereta last night and Mo and I saw it head off to S'Albufera at 8am this morning. Also there last night there was a juvenile Spoonbill and a Ring Ouzel on the Hotel lawn nearest to S'Albufereta along the seafront. Red-rumped Swallow was also seen at C'an Carussa.

Hi everybody. First of all, wish Mike a rapid recovery!

Yesterday in the finca Raixa (in Bunyola) my first Woodchat shrike this year, plus 3 Booted eagles, 3 Black vultures, many Red kites, Common Kestrels, plenty of Cirl buntings, Blackcaps, Serins, Linnets, Wren, etc. If you don't know the place, it is worth a visit and, if you are into history and culture, don't miss the impressive manor house dating back from the 18th century.

By the way, this Friday we have a tour to the Ternelles valley; if anyone is interested we still have some places left; better contact me at the email below.

Thanks very much Mike, that sounds perfect as the family won't want to rise early whilst on holiday!

Next time we visit Mallorca I'm definitely taking charge of where we stay and picking somewhere in the north!! The south-west seems a long way from a lot of the good spots on the island.

First full day back on the island and not a bad start,
Eurasian Bittern in flight from the Es Ras hide left to right, went down behind the dead trees 15:48
also White wagtail, Spotted Redshanks, Greenshanks, Cuckoo, Water Pipits, Purple Heron. Black Redstarts.

Hi Steve, yes, what a good start!
I was only talking about Great Bittern a couple of days ago so that’s a great sighting. I, and many other long-termers, have never seen one.
