I had my trap on for the first time this year last night - just one moth, a Herald: the earliest date I have caught one in my 18 years trapping here, and only my 20th.

I was surprised to find that nobody had set up a 'March Moths' thread so apologies if I have overlooked it somewhere.

My mate a couple of miles away did rather better than me - 8 Common Quakers, a Hebrew Character, an Oak Beauty and an Acleris cristana.

Like Steve, I “trapped” last night in more ways than one😮
Running the halogen and the UV simultaneously for the first time…in a long time!

Went outside to check the wall (didn’t use the trap) and found in the shadows a Beauty sp. Thinking I’ll sit on the garden table to get closer with my camera phone and head band torch.

Had just framed it and shot, when there was an almighty “crack!”
I’d rapidly gone through the table and wedged myself in!…knees up to chest with legs flailing around like a windmill and I couldn’t get out as I was too far down.😂😮

Fortunately my “yesteryear” bench presses came to the rescue and I “just about” managed
to haul myself out after numerous attempts.

Back to subject c20 + moths, mostly Common Quaker, also singles of Oak Beauty, Early Thorn, Small Brindled Beauty, small noctuid sp and a micro sp.

Don’t let anyone say that “moth-ing” isn’t an extreme sport! 😂

Fifty eight Common Quaker last night twenty eight a couple of nights ago. A few Small Quaker too. Other goodies have included Oak Beauties, Early Greys, Hebrew Characters and a Twin-spotted Quaker.

I trapped last Friday for the first week of the Garden Moth Scheme, the temperature dropped to minus 3.3C, so unsurprisingly there were no moths. Last night was GMS week 2, the temperature stayed at 6.1C and there was a single Chestnut in the trap, first moth of the year for me.

Went to our monthly mothing session at dawn & we had 9 species to light & over 30 Pammene giganteana to a pheromone trap. There had only been 2 previous reserve records to light.

To light we had :

Common Quaker 22
Small Quaker
Oak Beauty 2

Early Thorn
Chestnut 3
Brindled Pug
Hebrew Character 5

Moth trap was out for the first time this month on Sunday night. Monday morning (14th) I found 6 Common Quakers, 2 each of Hebrew Character and Small Quaker and an Oak Beauty. A Double-striped Pug had got into the kitchen and on the outside of the window were two micros: LBAM and Diurnea fagella, which obtains the distinction of my first self-identified new micro. It is entirely likely I will be seeking a lot of help on those this year, but it was nice to start with an easy one.

Brindled Pug (three of) yesterday morning, and what I beleive is a Beautiful Plume, which would be a tick. Also 59 Common & 49 Small Quakers, 8 Hebrew Characters, 7 Twin-spotted Quaker, 3 Clouded Drab and singles of March Moth, Chestnut, Dotted Border, Early Grey & March Tubic.

I trapped for the GMS last night, Friday night was too windy. My best ever 3rd week GMS total, 6 moths of 6 species. Pale Brindled Beauty, Common Quaker, Clouded Drab, Chestnut, Mottled Grey and Agonopterix heracliana. The temperature dropped to 4.5C, colder than last week, but we've had a couple of days of quite warm weather for the time of year.

Also found a Beautiful Plume on the garage door yesterday afternoon.

A bit late in posting but we trapped in the local Botley Wood last Friday and did quite well. Highlights were Red Sword-grass and acleris logiana.

Trapped for first time this year last night in rural Surrey. Lots of Small Quaker and Early Greys, a few Common Quaker and Brindled Pug and singles of Hebrew Character, Clouded Drab, Oak Beauty and Engrailed.

First macro tick of the year this morning, an Early Tooth-striped (I think, correct me if I'm wrong, rather than Mottled Grey).
