Saturday 24th April 2010 An early morning yomp out to Dawlish Warren for Kentish was poorly timed, the tide was well out and despite scanning the swathes of sand and beach all we found were ringed plover. We didn't have time for a sweep of the entire shore, as we had to be at Orley Common for a Funghi Foray. The only consolations Common Whitethroat, Sedge Warbler, Early Forget-me-not and Cuckoo Flower. The biggest consolation though - was a pile of white dog muck - proving that it does still exist still, despite recent banter. Arriving at Orley, there were plenty of alien plants in the car-park and one or true new natives, plus a mini beast or two. Across the mix of habitats that make up common, with the mycologists, sadly a lack of rain meant a poor funghi tally, with a few small rusts and crusts and the odd bracket. Flora and min-fauna however was good, and I was lucky enough to catch up with common lizard and find my own adder. After lunch a wander from the car park produced a fearsome looking beetle (yet to be id'd see seperate thread) and the only (non bracket) macro fungus of the day. The off to Ramshorne Down produced Pearl Bordered Fritillary, Brown Silver Line and a ground crab-spider. A visit to Yarner in the mid afternoon is not the best time for singing birds, but eventually we located wood warbler and pied flycatcher, and then a few mini beasts (mostly un-id'd) around the interpretation centre, plus of course wood ants on the trails. Knowing that the funghi continued with a lab session tomorrow we had a quick look on Haldon finding beech bracket and beech wood-wart before failing to locate tree pipit. A final visit to the University grounds and the mushroom of the day (albeit a day late) was St Georges Mushroom. Predicatably with the night falling - news that the KP was back on the warren! Sites: Dawlish Warren, Orley Common, Ramshorne Down, Yarner, Haldon, Exeter University, New Species : Common Whitethroat, Sedge Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler,Common Lizard, Adder, Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Brown-tail (caterpilla), Brown Silver Line, St Marks fly, Suilla variegata (fly), Wood Ant, Common Carder Bee, Common Earwig, Common Carder Bee, Arianella Cucurbitina (Spider), Xysticus Cristatus (Crab-spider) Glomeris Marginata (millipede), Early Forget-me-not, Cuckoo Flower, Spindle, Wayfaring Tree, Common Tormentil, Garlic Mustard, Wood-Spurge, Common Twayblade, Spurge Laurel, Wood Dog Violet, Thale Cress, Common Milkwort Funghi: Phyllopora Ribis, Hazel bracket, conocybe aporos, Beech Wood-wart, Southern Bracket, St Georges Mushroom, phacidiostroma multivalve Totals: Birds 159; Mammals 13; Reptiles 2; Butters 8; Moths 4; Spiders 8; Grasshoppers 1; Beetles 8; Flora 130; Funghi 32; Moss&Lichens 9; Misc 24; Marine 46 (errate - missed out weasel, grey seal from previous) Grand Total 443 Nicolas grips RL Partridge Un-id'd Stress Level: Mild but rising
