Sunday 16th May 2010 Another slow start after arriving home after midnight last night, weather not pleasant, overcast, gusty, cold with intermittent rain, including heavy downpours. We headed straight out for Castle Drogo for a funghus foray with the Devon Funghi group. THe group soon assembled and we trudged off in the grotty weather. Fortunately we were under cover for most of it, and it didn't bucket it down till close of play after lunch. By this time we had found a cross selection of intersting funghi, most noteably several (maybe even three) peziza species which various members of the group bagged for microscopic identification later. The list below is subject to verification, several probable identifications can only be confirmed by microscopy! Marginally easier to identify were singing tree pipits parachuting down from the tree tops, and the never ending song of a garden warbler that remained resolutely hidden.. The feathery leaves of a plant were pointed out as a common woodland umbellifer - pignut. After a banquet of chips at Princetown, in a rain lashed car, we checked out Holne Leat as we knew Lemon Scented Fern and Marsh Violet occured there, sure enough we found both, though neither Nicola nor I get the lemon scent thing. Mind you we don't do to well with the mushrooms either - this one.. smells of.. mushroom. Finished the day early in rubbish weather.. Sites: Castle Drogo, Holne Leat, Home New Species : Tree Pipit, Garden Warbler (heard), Blushing Bracket, Coprinus Lagopides, Birch Woodwart, Common Grey Disco, Yellow Fieldcap, beechmast candlesnuff, razorstrop fungus, pig-nut, common ramping fumitory, marsh violet, lemon scented fern, rough sow-thistle Totals: Birds 170; Funghi 40; Flora 191 GT 570 Nicola's grips RL Partridges **Slowworm!!** Unidentified Stress level - remains high
