Thanks Svein, it was a lovely surprise to find the Striped hawk-moth, an immigrant. I should see Poplar and Privet Hawks pretty soon now - hopefully!

I always enjoy your photos - you get some pretty smart moths!

Hi Nerine

I was in Morocco for two weeks in March and Painted Ladies were on the move in huge numbers. Almost everywhere we went we would see a constant movement of them, even high up in the mountains.

It was great to see them and the first time I have ever seen the visible migration of any insect.

John

Not much last night in the trap. I've been away and arrived home yesterday first thing in the morning to find my garden full of Painted Ladies! :t: I've put a message in the P L migration thread. No sign of any so far this morning.

Nerine

I counted another 28 flying through the garden today. Strong west wind blowing.

What a stunning moth the Striped Hawk-moth is Nerine. Now that is a moth I would love to see in my garden.

John

I had 18 moths, 8 species in the trap after a windy night, the highlight being a new one for me:

Striped Hawkmoth (new!) |=)|
Large Yellow Underwing (nfy)
Shuttle-shaped Dart (5)
Vine's Rustic (4)
Heart & Dart (3)
Ruby Tiger
Muslin Moth
E.Postvittana (2)

The weather is awful, persistent rain and getting worse so I couldn't get the photo I wanted of the hawk-moth. It's an indoor pic on a dull egg box but the moth itself is beautiful!

One of the Shuttle-shaped Darts I trapped last night was exceptionally pretty - I suppose it is one?! Their markings and colour vary hugely.

Nerine
ps added a photo showing the attractive antennae. The weather stayed grim, I tried some pics outside but the wind blew up its wings into a flap! I'd liked to have got one with the wings slightly open but he wouldn't co-operate!

I only had a short session last night (till 11) but had at least seven nfy. Most numerous was flame shoulder (13).
NFY:
ghost swift
angle shades
broken-barred carpet
middle-barred minor
clouded silver
maiden's blush
Tortrix viridana

I also had an elephant hawk emerge from the larva of last autumn.

Hi John, that must have been very exciting. Did you see the interesting link that Xenospiza gave us - #55 in Painted Lady Migration?

I hope to be counting again this weekend!

Martin,

It's a Turnip Moth. Seems very early for so many Orange Swifts - could they be orangey-looking Commons?

Orange swifts are out in Norfolk. Had one last weekend ( we get orange and commons ) , but the moths seem all over the place this year with early spring species such as brindled beauty ( a March\early April species for me ) still being caught in mid May and pop hawks in late April ( usually a mid May species for me ).

I have a large white table under an old oak by my office . Usually its covered with caterpiler droppings at this time of year , but very few at the moment . That does not bode well for later in the season.

Hi Nerine

Talk about timing.

I was sitting at work today, occasionally looking through the office window (I work in Leamington Spa) and from 2.30pm to 4.30pm there must have been 40+ Painted Lady's going between two blocks of offices on our Industrial estate in two's & three's.

I have never seen anything like that.

John

I had 41 moths in my trap last night. 17 different species. Highlights for me were Green Carpet, Silver Y, and White Ermine

As I was releasing the Green Carpet a while ago it flew back onto my t-shirt so I walked over to the window ledge on the shed and put him on it thinking it would fly away from there, as I have done on previous nights, no sooner had I put it on there when a huge spider came out from a corner pounced on it and dragged it back to its den. I was astounded and felt really guilty for putting it on there, I couldn't even try to help it as it happened so quickly. Needless to say I wont be putting anymore on there again.
