We went to Menorca 14th - 21st of September. Lovely place, nice scenery, beautiful beaches and best of all it was fairly quiet (aided by the end of the school holidays). As this was a family holiday with our 1 year old I never was going to have much birding time. I managed 3 hours one morning near the resort of Sant Tomas and another hour at S'Albufera. Having my bins with me most of the time I still managed to pick up a few bits. Most productive was the morning I walked from Sant Tomas to Son Bou. I got absolutely drenched on the way out and was happy that there were a few bushes and trees I could find some shelter. First birds seen were Sardinian Warbler and Spotted Flycatchers. Along the beach a couple of Audouin's Gulls performed nicely. Reaching the dunes of Son Bou I saw a few Stonechats and a group of Corn Buntings. I flushed a Nightjar and a Marsh Harrier was patrolling the reedbeds, where I also saw a Great Reed Warbler. A little further on I stumbled across a Great Grey Shrike but views were not great so no idea what race this would have been. On the way back I saw a couple of Tawny Pipits , Wheatear and best of all a small group of Thekla Larks. This was my only lifer of the trip. A group of Cattle Egret were feeding in a horse paddock. Not bad result for a bit of early morning birding. The second best area was the reserve of S'Albufera. The guy at the visitors centre told us the tracks are buggy friendly but that just wasn't true. Hence the visit was cut short. The reserve held 100s of Little Egrets, one Osprey and three distant terns which I'm pretty sure were Whiskered Terns. A touch too distant with no scope. The bushes were full of warblers most of which went unidentified. I managed to see Fan-tailed Warbler and a few Reed Warblers and many Cetti's Warblers were heard.
