FWIW this happens to me all the time. I'll use the binoculars for a session and it seems like everything is off, I can't focus properly and can never get them positioned just right. It's almost always because the hinge has shifted and IPD is off.
When I get the IPD in the right place, the eyecups often feel like they're too close together and the hinge should be open more. But once I start observing for a while, I realize it's the correct position.
